How long do you guys think it'll be before the sale barns shut down? Soon would be my guess. How will packers get product to market in areas where sale barns are still the main source of beef for smaller slaughterhouses? I held off on shipping some smaller feeders left over from fall. I guess I'll hang onto what is left and keep feeding them......

What I?m reading is they only want serious buyers to attend. Fewer people and spread out, that 6 feet apart deal.

I think we all move forward one day at a time and see how it goes.

Update on the United Producers website says that in the state of Ohio,registered buyers only. Sellers drop off cattle and leave the grounds. It hasn't happened in Michigan yet,but I'm sure it's coming soon.

I'm going to hang on for a while hoping for a price recovery. Fat cattle futures were up the limit yesterday.

We sold two fat steers to hoarders yesterday for the same price we were getting in December. Another one stopped in late in the afternoon. The wife told them the price and how it works,told them to call the slaughterhouse and make an appointment then just let us know what day they need to be there.

Trouble with any recovery in the cash price though,is that the big feedlots can supply enough to keep the packers running to keep up with the reduced demand. Top price at the local sale barn this week was $102. Three weeks ago it was $118. We told them $110 on the ones we sold yesterday.

I'm hopin the price for fat cattle inches up. The ones I have on feed are gaining nicely. Now, all I have to hope for is my ear corn supply holds out and I can make some baleage this spring.

Durant (Oklahoma) Stockyards sold 1.386 yesterday with all the rain they have had. Nice turnout. Great stockyard. I got $3250 for a grade Brangus 3 year old when I sold my herd. No way did I expect that....but he was really nice and had all the right traits....may have been a couple of "good-ole-boys" with more money than sense, outbidding each other....but that's Ok.

United producers updated their website on the 22nd. Says sale barns have been deemed "essential services" and will remain open with registered buyers only. Fats topped at $120 yesterday in St Louis Mi,compared to $102 last week. Things are looking up. I just hope they hold.

One of the big packers in PA has been affected by the nnalert 19 and is closed for a couple of weeks. All the sale barns around here are still open but not taking any small animals (chickens ducks rabbits etc) and limiting the sals to buyers and sellers only. A few spring machinery consignment sales are canceled, some consignment and on-farm dispersals are postponed or rescheduled for a later date. The sale barns are considered ?essential ? so are allowed to operate. I just hope this nnalert doesn?t affect animals/ livestock.
