Clover after 2-4d

I have large areas of my lawn that is infested with a vining weed and thistles. It needs a dose of 2-4D to kill it. We like to have clover in our yard. I am aware the 2-4D will wipe out the clover. Question is, if I spray it now, early fall, how soon can I seed clover again? Spring? Next fall? The label doesn't indicate replant time for clovers.

I don't know your area, but if you go with the recommended amount now you can frost seed the clover in the spring. 2 4d does not stick around long, kind of like roundup. On the helpful side is an established stand of clover is hard to kill.

I've sprayed clover incidental to spaying other weeds. It might burn down but it seem to come right back. To really kill it might take multiple sprayings.

SE Michigan, base of the thumb. Frost seeding would be perfect. I'll try to spray next week assuming the weekend rain ends. The fall spray seems to get a better kill on the perennial weeds.

The 2,4-D will do a good job on broad leaf weeds, like dandelions, thistles, but at best will just turn a few clover leaves brown, if you spray in the fall it will be fine by spring. I've had ever larger patches of clover taking over more and more of my yard. Short of spraying the patches with Round-Up I gave up trying get rid of it.

There are mild versions of 24D that actually won?t kill the clover, but work on most broadleaf weeds.

Since the patent is off many years she go, I hate to list any names, as there are many generics.

But you might want to look up some of the special mild 24D versions and see if it will kill the broadleaves you want and leaves the grass, clover, and alfalfa alone.

Here:

2,4-DB (butyrac)
While 2,4-DB, or butyrac as it is sometimes referred to, is very similar to 2,4-D with one very important difference: it will not kill certain legumes such as many common species of clover and alfalfa when applied correctly. This makes it a great choice for controlling broadleaf weeds in pure stands of clover or in mixes of clover and cereal grains (wheat, rye, and/or oats). Do not use 2,4-DB if the mix contains brassicas, chicory or other broadleaf forbs, as they will likely be damaged or killed.

24d has a 30 day planting restriction on planting legumes following application per the label . I have sprayed established clover and it didn?t hurt it

I've yet to have 2,4D kill established clover. Even when I try. BTW, spraying now likely won't help with your weeds and thistle. Just too late in the year. Try this coming spring.

Yeah, the endless rain and other projects punted this to next spring. On the good side, if we get the same weather
I'll be able to seed any time of the year. what a swampy year we've had.
