What kind of grass is this?

I'm trying to get a hay field going, and parts of it have this grass in the picture growing in it. I'm not sure what kind of grass it is, and I'd like to know so I can decide if I'm going to leave it or take it out. I'm hoping to get a nice stand of mixed grass hay for horses. It's kind of hard to see in the picture, but some of the longer leaves of the grass have a purplish tinge to them. Should it stay, or should it go??

It can be really tough to ID grasses until a seed head forms. Certain soil deficiencies can sometimes cause the different colorations, so the purple may or may not be normal for that species. And honestly, if you have it now you're not going to get rid of it without spraying the entire field and killing all grasses. I'd just let it seed out and see what you have, but there aren't many grasses that are a problem.

Thanks, this is in Central Ohio by the way. The soil was fertilized last fall from a known soil sample, and it did need limed which I haven't done yet. Hopefully it isn't foxtail.

It very well could be, but honestly it's nearly impossible to put up hay around here without foxtail unless you're willing to spend a lot of time and money managing it. And it's not usually worth the worry. I know some horse people will refuse to buy hay if they see foxtail, and talk about how "dangerous" it is. But the vast majority of hay has foxtail in it and very seldom are there any issues.

Forgot to mention, I'm in East Central Ohio, so I was referring mostly to our general area. My neighbor puts up thousands of small squares and most are sold to people with horses. And most of it has foxtail in it. Last year was horrible, the stuff was everywhere for second and third cuttings. I don't mind it for my cows, but the variety that popped up everywhere was fairly small, making for low yield.
