Post hole depth

Used my Woods Equipment post hole auger for the first time today and it bottomed out at 36" or so. I figured there must be an extension for it, but I'm really not seeing them anywhere. Would have thought everyone would have them. Do folks just use the standard length bit and leave the depth as is?

If your setting a corner post no. You gotta take a pair of
jobbers and a spade and make the hole deeper. A 7' line post
that is ok.

No, a 36" hole is not deep enough. Measure how high your 3 point raises the auger off the ground. Minus about 3 or
4 inches off of that measurement. Take auger off digger, and take to a welding shop, and have them make a bolt on
extension for the measurement you came up with.

As for depth of holes, I always try to plant atleast 4' of post in the ground. I dig holes deeper if I can. Saves
from having to clean out the loose dirt that always falls back in. I don't mess with any posts shorter than 9'. If
I do things right, I end up with 5' of post out of the ground.

I use a 36" because I post hole dig with a Ford 3000 with Live PTO (perfect for PH digging) and that's all it can take. On fall backs into the hole, when I am at the max depth I push in the clutch, thus stopping the rotation of the PTO, lift it straight out of the hole and when the bottom of the auger clears the hole, I let the clutch out. 95% of the "finds" sling off, out of the way.

Depends on location and soil type but augers range from 3 ft to 6ft long, mine are 4 ft.
I like a 3-3 1/2 ft hole for using a 8 ft post so that I have 4 1/2 - 5 ft of post sticking out.
Ground here packs good so a deep hole isn't needed, also if we go very deep we hit rock.
For loose sandy soil or deep frost lines you may need to go deeper.

I found several from 12" to 3 ft.
