Garden Prep Question

So I have a Ford 860 with an old 2 bottom plow. I plowed a few months ago and the ground has been untouched since then. The garden plot is currently 80' by 100' but I don't plan on using all of that, probably just 40' by 80'.

Does it do any good to re-plow the land? I don't have disc but thought that re-plowing might break it up a little more before a rear-tine tiller is run over it. My garden soil is "silty-loam" to "silty-clay".

What would you all do?

dont plow twice unless its been long enough for all the seeds to die. What plowing does besides breaking up the soil is turn vegetation, weeds etc under deep enough they cant grow.If you plow twice you simply turn them back to the surface. What i do is disc(or use cultivator) to break up surface, plow, then disc again.this leaves a pretty compact seedbed with good contact with subsoil.in your case i simply would run your roto-tiller and let it go.

I should have mentioned also that several species of insects ,such as corn borers ,grasshoppers etc lay their eggs in the soil.Plowing helps kill them because they cant hatch and make their way to the surface. If you replow you also turn their eggs back up.Thats where a plow has an advantage over certain other tillage equipment.Theres really no need for a plow with a rototiller unless your breaking hard ground for the first time.As it will put your ground in pretty good shape by itself. But you lose some of the advantages mentioned by simply roto tilling, since it wont kill weed seeds or insect eggs. And in fact encourages their growth to a certain extent.

Trying to plow really loose ground, like I assume yours is, usually doesn't work to well. The bottoms have a tendancy to just push the soil without lifting it and rolling it off the moldboards like it should. If your soil has consolidated and packed down over winter it might work but I still don't think it would be much benefit.
