Just wondering if we could sue Monsanto?

Here is a thought? Over the years Monsanto has sued several people and won for using their RR genes...........so along comes weeds that are now roundup resistant and invading our crops.........Or is Monsanto going to sue God for using their RR genes in his weeds? And IF weeds can become roundup tolerant who is to say that our crops can not do the same thing? Like that guy in Canada and his canola? Who is to say that his canola just became resistant to Roundup? My point is if weeds can do it spontaniously why cant our crops?

I don't have the answers to your questions but if our crops could do what weeds do we probably wouldn't need Round Up. I've seen weeds in my garden form seeds with only one root hair still in the ground in the middle of a severe drought - I'd love to see the things I grow be that tough.

I doubt it. Monsanto had warned against using Roundup as a sole source of weed control. Too many people who thought they knew more than the company making the stuff didn't listen.

I'm going to stongly disagree with you on this point. M said ovr & over & over in the beginning, that would never happen.

Many of us knew better, and other companies - with an agenda to sell their herbicides of course - were advising not to rely on glyphosate only. But in the beginning, M poo-pooed that thought.

Anyone is free to sue anyone if they can find a lawyer to take the case. Suing is not illegal. Any farmer with a bit of herbicide experience knows that weeds do get resistant to herbicides over time. Been happening since the introduction of herbicides decades ago. Just a fact of science.

I remember grumbling to the DeKalb salesman about having to take my restricted pesticide test every three years when RR seed first came out. Told him I had half a mind to forget about it and just go all Roundup ready, spray with that and be done with it. He told me right there and then, early on,that Monsanto was advising that we only use RR seed every other year.
That said,I'm planting RR every year, but I spray my corn with atrazine and Prowl. It still works as good as it ever did,it's just nice to have the option to have RR to clean up patches of nutsedge.
Flat out, anybody using RR only is to blame for resistance, not Monsanto.

I guess my jist of this thread was that Monsanto has such a stranglehold on some farmers wehn it comes to RR traits. I feel that if weeds can become resistant to it why not normal crops and then if they do can monsanto sue the farmer for that.

That being said I am just a small potatoe when it comes to farming. More of a hobby and way to release stress much like some do going fishing or hunting. I have by no means made money on my small acrage (40) but I am gaining and having fun. I use a mold board plow for weeds, spray very little and use buckwheat for green manure for my crops that I do grow to feed my pigs and sheep. I have thought about using RR corn or beans but decide against it. I just have fun.

I was always told to keep it at no more than one application per year. I dont use it on corn at all, and I still use a pre on soybeans on 80% of acres so RR has been a useful tool to me. I know of guys that use it as a burndown then again as a post then another dose before harvest if needed. Well theres no doubt going to be a problem soon enough on these fields.

Hey you rascal where have you been? Are you so busy that you do not have any computer time? Besides that I want to know what your favorite toy was, me I have still got my toy, had it since birth and still play with it on occasion, but not as much since I have gotten older!

If I recall right they have. I do not recall all the details but a fella had something growing at the end of a field he couldn't kill. Turned out it had the gene in it and he got sued. Do not remember the out come, but at the time I remember thinking the shoe should be on the other foot. Farmer should have sued Monsanto for the gene infestation......

BTW - From everything I have read, you have to have signed Monsanto's contract to be sued. But it has been a while since I really cared.....
