Hay making screw-up advice....

Our new hay guy(older gentleman, & he wrapped some tight,Straight bales!!!) I called him a month back to get on his "list". He`s done us the Best so far on time frame! Pre-school time. Now, I asked for 4-4 1/2 footers because the back hydraulics on my MF to35 are weak, I`ll admit it!!! I`m "lucky" enuff to have a Wagner FEL on the front & my forks go on the front Too. Long story short, HE told me "No problem", on making 4- 4 1/2`ers.....He made 5 1/2 to 6`ers. I was spin`n tires....& had a bush-hog on back(counter-weight). Do I any right in saying, 5 & a 1/2 footters weren`t the "deal"....&....I can`t move them!!! The last bale, I`m "guessing"....was about 4 1/2 to 5 & was able to move it.
I guess I`m rant`n some, BUT.....HE said, 4-4 1/2, NO Problem!!!
.....thats BS!!! Check`s NOT on the way YET!!! Advise `preciated!

Well number one fix your hyds so you do not keep having that problem. Plus do like I do use lots of weight and filled tires Here is the picture of my 841 ford and what I have to use to move my bales. 6 85lbs suit case weights and a 150lbs wheel weight but my bales do come in around 2000lbs

Thank you OLD, I was hope`n U`d chime in!!!....he "said" he`d make 4-4 1/2`er.....Damn it!!!....glad dave ain`t "bother`n ya....I appreciate the guidance.....I`m not happy on numbers though!.....Thanks fer repling!

One question comes to mind -- Did you get the 5.5 - 6 footers for the price agreed upon for the 4 -4.5 footers? If you did, be thankful!
JMHO, Dave
Edit: Just going from a 4.5 footer to a 5.5 footer will give you half again as much hay per bale!

I"m thinking he just simply forgot. I"d have no problem calling him and telling him that I couldn't move them because of the "screw-up". I"m also betting he will go out of his way to move them for you. Try it, what have you got to lose?
You still will need to feed them, so now like OLD said, get your hydraulics fixed. You know you need to do it anyway. The old guy may have done you a long term favor.

Bet since the guy does a lot of haying for others he just plan forgot you wanted them smaller. I know with my round baler it can be a lot more work to do a smaller bale then the bigger ones. Witn my bales if I do not have the fluid in the tires and the heavy duty back blade on with the suit case weights 6 of them at 85lbs each plus the wheel weight off a JD-D I could not move my bales due to the fact a tire come off the ground. Not fun to have one of the rear times come up off the ground when you lift a bale and then try to go some place with it

Older baler? Have you ever run a round baler? My old 605F shuts down when it is full. The gauge is helpful, but not really accurate to within a 1/2 foot all the time on the old gal.

I'd try to make them smaller if you asked, but the accuracy of me guessing when to stop would be a little hit & miss from one bale to the next.....

I'd be disappointed, as you are, but you wanted round bales & you got round bales, you should pay the man. You can ask about the size thing, ask what happened, and maybe he'd volinteer what happened, or offer to take a little off.

It's one of those things, if you want total control of what you get, you gotta buy your own equipment. If he made good bales of hay and missed the perfect size a bit with an old baler, I can sure see that happening. If he's got a modern baler with the computer controls very new, then I'd question a little harder as I paid him.

Rather than complain about the guy, think your focus should be on getting your tractor running right & then you can handle the full sized bales. The other side of the coin is it's hard to work with/ deal with customers that don't keep their stuff up and expect you to adjust to their non-working stuff. I mean this gently, and nicely, and I got lots of stuff in the shed that's less than 100% myself so I understand! :)

I'd suggest getting the check in the mail ASAP. Fact is you may not have gotten exactly what you wanted but you got more hay per bale, hence fewer bales so a lower total price. He's already hit once on the bale counts.

Based on your description of the issues youve been having with operators and getting bales to suit you probably the best thing to do is get your own baler and do it the way you want it.

I would get the check in the mail ASAP, and wait until next year and then ask him again just before he comes to do it. If you get ornery you probably better get to looking for your own equipment.
