Latest to plant hay

When is the latest one could plant a timothy alfalfa mix of hay in this spring? Will be using oats as a cover crop.

I'm in Ontario, Canada -- northeast. I heard mid-May was about the latest.

If I planted in late May, could I expect a decent cutting by August? Or would I be wasting my time/money because the oats will go dormant and not help establish the hay stand?

Here in Washington, timothy is usually planted in the fall. Oats are planted in the spring as a rotation crop. I planted oats last year as a cover crop for alfalfa in May and had a good stand. Oats grow fast and needed to be cut around the beginning of July before they reseeded themselves. Didn't get much alfalfa but this year the alfalfa is looking good.

Last year here in se wi i planted 13 acres of timithy, orchardgrass and alfafa ,with a cover crop of oats. The oats didn't turn out real well, due to the hard rain ten days after i planted but everything else looks real good i planted late may 21 didn't want to take the chance of trying to take a crop off in fall. looked good ,i wanted to roots to be strong for this year so i left it alone ,hope it helps steve
