Johnsongrass elimination in Coastal Bermuda???

What's a good way to eliminate JG in a Coastal field. My chemical applicator told me soil is too H2O saturated for a pre-emerge to work.

I'm leaning toward a rope wick applicator with Roundup mounted on my frt end loader. I thought I'd ask before purchase of rope wick. I also have some small patches of Bahia grass that needs to go before it chokes out my Coastal.
Thanks,Jim

Jim, Roundup on a rope wick applicator is the best way to go after Johnson Grass in a well established Coastal stand.IMO. The Bahia, well a small 15 gal battery sprayer or hand pump garden sprayer will work fine. Just coat the Bahia and try not to kill too much Coastal on the outer edge of the Bahia patches.
If possible mow off close to get rid of as much old growth as possible so you can find the spots easier later.
Probably need to wait till it jumps out and is really actively growing. You will need as much new growth up as possible to get the Roundup translocated to the roots. Good luck, Happy Weed Killing!

Jim, Let us know how that works. My neighbor to the east is a city developer that has lost his a$$ since the market went downhill, so now he thinks he is a farmer. The perimeter of his field is solid Johnson Grass and I have been fighting it from my side of the fence trying to keep it off of me. If I get it in my fields I am screwed, as I farm organic.

I remember walking up/down rows of corn or cotton as a youngster hoeing JG. The more one agitates JG the MORE it grows.

Does being organic stop you from spraying fence row?

Is Johnson Grass a declared noxious weed where you live? If so then your local noxious weed agency can force him to control it.

I don't know and am asking----Can Oust be used in a weed wiper? I've heard excellent results of its use on JG.

Johnson Grass hasn't been declared a noxious weed to my knowledge. If It is the Texas DOT would be in trouble as state highway bar ditches are full of it.

I don't hate Johnson Grass as it has good feed value if cut at right stage. But horsey people think their horses will die if they eat JG.

Real problem with JG in Coastal is when cut it dries slower.

there is a product called Outrider that is specifically for this.

Last year, TDA declared a section 18 label on Maverick (exact same product as Outrider).

They have since moved the label over to Outrider. It is a more expensive treatment, targeted for the hay producer, but very effective.

(quoted from post at 00:06:05 03/03/10) if you can keep it mowed it will eventually die out. but you have to keep it mowed short.

Weather permitting I cut it 3 to 4 times per hay season for hay and that's not slowing it down. So I'm going to try a herbicide.
