Well, I planted 2.5 acres of alfalfa last year so this was my first year of cutting it. not too bad but not what I expected either.

First cutting was weedy and i got 1/2 ton per acre.

Second cutting looked really good and was cut at right time but then got over a week of unexpected rains (weatherman said hot and dry) finally got baled and looked like really good alfalfa straw.......

Third cutting was very late due to constant rains so it came off mid sepetember.........1/2 ton per acre again but it was a really good looking cut.....

There will be no fourth cutting on this field.

So is this normal or average for first year alfalfa?

field looks great now going into fall.........

All depends on where you are at and the fertility of you field as to whether that is good or not.

Here in SE Iowa if we don't get 5 ton per acre a year it is a bad year.

I have gotten as high as 8 ton an acre the first year after seeding year.

Tell me about your soil. How do other crops yield in your area?

3 cutting are normal here in Iowa sometimes 4.
