Trying to figure to convert cost per pound to dollars per gal. How many pounds of propane per gallon. Got the camper 30# bottel recertified and filled to use on my torch and cost was $.90 per # so how much does that make per gal.? No charge to get recertified and they said on the 20# grill bottle with the old style valve just bring in and exchange for a filled new style bottle at cost of propane and if I would have had to change to new style valve on 30# tank would have been only charge for the propane.

Propane weighs in at 4.24 pounds per gallon.

The price of replacement valves really dropped over what they cost when the first valve changes were required. Back then the change was about as much as a new bottle.

The valves are being sold for less than $10 now, IF you find the right sales site.

Because of the bottle collar they can be a bit tricky to replace without the proper tool.

Electricity:
1 KW = 3,413 Btu/hr
Natural gas:
1 Cubic Foot of Natural Gas = 1030 Btu’s
1 CCF = 100 Cu Ft = 1 Therm = 103,000 Btu’s
1 MCF = 1,000 Cu Ft = 10 Therms = 1,034,000 Btu’s = 1.034 MMBtu’s
Propane:
1 Gal Propane = 91,600 Btu’s
1 Cu Ft Propane = 2,500 Btu’s
Gasoline:
1 Gal Gasoline (mid grade) = 125,000 Btu’s
Ethanol:
1 Gal Ethanol = 76,000 Btu’s
Fuel Oil:
1 Gal of #2 Fuel Oil = 139,000 Btu’s
1 Gal of #4 Fuel Oil = 145,000 Btu’s
1 Gal of #6 Fuel Oil = 150,000 Btu’s
1 Barrel of Oil = 42 Gallons
1 Btu = 252 calories
1 Btu= .293 watt
1 ton of refrigeration = 12,000 Btu/hr
1lb residential garbage = 2,500 Btu
1lb coal = 12,000 Btu
1lb wood = 3,500 Btu
1hp = 746 watts
1hp = 33, 479 Btu/hr (boiler)
1hp = 33,000 foot-lbs./min
1hp = 42,440 Btu/min.
1 watt = 3.412 Btu
1 kilowatt = 1,000 watts
1 kilowatt = 1.341 horsepower
1000 kilowatts = 1 Megawatt

Thanks Greenbean Man. With that I figure the propane cost me 3.81 & 6/10 per gal and my 30# tanks hold 7.0 gal while my 20# tanks hold 4.7 gal. I though it might be costing up to around $5 per gal. Got a 500 gal tank for the house and on that they fill to 80% or 420 gal so this question. Is the 30# at a 80% fill level or is it total size and would only be filled to 80% of the 7.00 gal? If that way I would only have 5.6 gal. Would that be correct.

"Would that be correct." No.

A thirty pound tank is called a thirty pound tank because it is designed to hold thirty pounds of propane.

You would have about thirty pounds of propane or seven gallons in a thirty pound tank at about eighty percent fill.

Since Sid already answered before I read this thread again I'll just add this----

The 500 gallon household tank is rated in gallon water capacity and on the tank label you will find that it is stamped W.C. to indicate such.
