cleveland flowering pear trees O.T.

I have planted 2 of these trees in my front yard.A guy at work said they would split out and rootball by the time they get up to 15 feet. Did I mess up.Anyone had any issues with these trees? Thanks in advance. RON

The word around here (W. Ky.) is that you want to plant Clevelands instead of Bradfords. From experience Bradfords are prone to split. I"ve never planted any Clevelands but those who have have not had any trouble with them.

I've got about 12 Bradford Pears, and they are nice trees. The only thing is, we have to keep the watersprouts coming off the roots trimmed back. With 2 trees you shouldn't have any problem with that, though.

You done good. Tougher than nails. My 5 survived the ice storm this winter with only a couple broke branches. That is 1 behind pick-up in picture.
Power out 4 days. Took many trees out.

The guy at your work is talking about 'Bradford' pears. They are notorious for splitting and rot due to the branches tight crotch angles. The 'Cleveland' pear is one of the best ornamental pear varieties you can buy. It has much better branching habit, creating a much stronger tree. You made the right choice.
