deutz air filter

My daughter and son in law live in an area in southern Michigan where there are a lot of Amish people. I happened to visit an Amish cabinet shop. They don"t use electricity. Instead they use a diesel engine connected to a drive shaft that they run all of the saws, planers, etc. They use an older Deutz 2 cylinder air cooled engine to provide power. Because I am mechanic, I was looking over the engine, and I saw that it had a oil bath air filter assembly. There is no book available, so I was wondering if someone would know what kind of oil should be used in the air filter?

I put 10w40 in mine because it's what I had on hand when cleaning. Book for my tractor calls for 20 wt.

They used the same oil as in the crankcase those filters were used on all engines till the paper ones came into use. Better be careful saying im a mechanic.

Fascinating--how does using a modern piece of eqpmt like a diesel for power differ from using electricity??
I know nothing about the Amish--are there some groups more susceptible to "modern" things than other groups??
