I desperately need clarification on the oil type to be used in the transmission/hydraulic system/diff common sump box? heard to date either SAE 50 or SAE 90....big difference....what is the successful, non damage causing anseplease???

Bob........welp, in 1939, Ford spec'd 90wt gear oil per Harry Ferguson's design. Modern GL-1 is a close approximation, see NAPA. DO NOT USE modern multi-wt oil like GL-4, or GL-5. When Harry split the blanket with Henry II in 1948, he took all the 9N drawings with him and built the TEA-20 and guess what??? spec'd the original 1939 hydro-tranny oil. Isn't that amazing???

Ford/New-Holland now recommends spec: M2C-134D, which is 50-wt oil. .......so now you know, pay yer money and make yer choice.

BTW, iff'n yer hydraulics ain't upto snuff, choose the HEAVY 90wt oil. Simple, eh? ........Dell

WANTING TO KNOW THE RIGHT OIL RE TRANS/HYDRAULIC STSTEN/DIFFERENTIAL COMMON BOX SOME BOOKS SAY sae 90 AND SERVICE PEOPLE SAY sae 5 - 50 PLEASE HELP AS CONCERNED FOR HYDRAULIC UNIT

THANKYOU...SO ITS SAE 5-50 SAE AS RECOMMENDED BY SERVICE PEOPLE THE REFERENCE TO SAE 90 WAS FROM A SERVICE MANUEL, THAT TOO MADE SENSE BECAUSE OF DIFF & GEARBOX SECTIONS.
THE SAE 5-50 FROM SERVICE MEN IS CALLED BY SUCH NAMES AS FARM OIL , AG OIL ETC & IS ADDITIONALLY RECOMMENDED FOR EVEN THE ENGINE.

The OEM transhydraulic oil was GL-1 SAE 90 for summer and SAE 80 for winter. The engine lube oil was SAE 30W.

NAPA still has the GL-1 oil and if you search the archives you"ll find a part number for it. In England, GL-1 oils are apparently not avaiable and John(UK) a frequent contributor on the Harry Ferguson Forum, has talked to Castrol and they say you can use 15W30 motor oil. 15W30 is not available here in the States to my knowlwdge so some people have used 15W40 with success, so far. I haven"t heard of any problems with it but that dosen"t mean any thing.
