I own a john deere 4010 diesel. Doesnt run the greatest in the first place wont lie and needs an overhaul. But reasently it has been starting right up and running for about 5 seconds then quiting. When I try to start it again, it takes about 30 seconds of cranking to get it to start up and run right. If anybody has any tips or has had it happen please help!

Just to eliminate it as a possibility, there's a little plate on the side of the injector pump. It's about an inch wide, half inch high, has two flat head screws holding it on. Take that off and see if it's full of ground up rubber.

No personal experience, but I have read other posts where a Roosa master pump will do things like that when the plastic "govenor ring"?? starts to fail and cloggs a return valve on the pump return line with bits of plastic.

Start at the beginning. Remove the line from the fuel tank to the primer pump to see if the line is clear and free flowing. Do the same up to the fuel filters. Replace the fuel filters . Take the supply line off tbe injection pump. Pump the primer hndle to eliminate the possibility of a bad primer/lift pump.Remove the timing window and look for ground plastic that looks like coffee grounds. If you find any at all, pull the pump and have it rebuilt. Another posibility is the fuel return atop the injectors is plugged with those same coffee grounds. These tips are for starters to check.

I believe you will fine the return line to the tank isn't returning any fuel. This will cause the two plunger in the pump to resist moving to fill with fuel and engine will die, because of lack of fuel. This is caused by the rubber governor weight retainer ageing and coming apart in little pieces plugging up the return.

It sounds to me that fuel is bleeding back out of fuel filters. Before trying to start engine open bleed screw on filter and pump handle on lift pump. Let us know how many strokes it takes to get fuel out of bleed screw.

JD rowcrop tractors have been known to get a "pin hole" in fuel line from tank to lift pump which allows air to enter fuel system but fuel doesn't leak out.
