Just don't make good sense.....OT

I remembered reading a post the other day about advertising, etc and it got me thinking tonight when I saw a commercial for a new razor. Any of you remember the big deal made when they started making them with multiple blades? The idea as far back as I can remember has always been that the first blade caught the whisker, pulled it up, cut it, and the second one got it again before it sunk back down below the skin. This left your face "baby smooth". This same basic idea of the whisker being pulled up, etc, etc has been lauded for ages as they added more and more blades. Tonight I see a commercial for another new razor with, it looked like, five blades now.

Now what is being lauded is that the blades are so sharp that they don't tug or pull the whisker at all, unlike what the old razors did. Heck where the old commercials clearly showed the whisker being tugged up and cut twice the new one just shows the blade gliding through a whisker that showes absolutely no sign of being moved beyond the blade hitting and cutting it.

Now I ask you, is this advertising or is it advertising? The very thing that made the old razors so great now makes them not so great. Funny thing is there are guys out there that will rush out to buy the latest and greatest razor now just because their old one isn't supposed to be any good.

I guess it all goes to prove the old saying that,'there's a sucker born every minute'....

Maybe people will learn that advertizing is there for one thing only and that is to sell product. You can't sell the same product forever, hence so called better new product. I for one think the twin blade razors are just fine, but the razor companies would rather sell a five blade razor at more than three times the price.

Would use the 50's model if they were available.
I never had any trouble taking a blade out of its wrapping and placing in the razor,But they have us by the proverbials.

The Remington microscreen 2 electric is a drag on the wallet . The screen on mine lasts 2 weeks and replacement is $20 a pop. Put three in so far and it is about to overtake the purchase price so I have parked it. testing before release may have picked up the flaw.

I saw a show on how they make razor blades a while back, I think it was on Modern Marvels. The technology that's used to make the new blades is quite amazing. They coat the blade with a special material so it can be both flexible and hold an edge.

Now the razor manufacturers come up with new razors every few years so they can charge more money for the blades. But they really do improve them with each generation. My five-bladed razor, although the blades are ridiculously expensive, works far better than my older one with three blades. The technology is that much better.

The 2 blade razor is worthless.Whiskers and soap pile up between the blades .Rinsing cant get channel clean. My old Gillette works fine.Bought a lifetime supply of blades in a second hand barn.Stainless from England, they give many shaves with out pulling.Friend is always giving me stuff that doesnt work.He gave me a partial package of plastic 2 blade razors that dont work.I saw some odd looking golf Ts that said Low Friction. How much friction can there be between the T and the ball.Wonder how they measured the difference.

Wonder how many folks that knock the 5-blade razor have actually tried it. Been using those disposables for several years and recently bought a Schick 5-blade. The difference is incredible; I've been using it a little better than 3 weeks and am still on the 1st blade(s).

While I'm sure there's plenty of "marketing" going on with razors, I got to admit that the new ones seems to work better and better. I used the single for a long time, then went to double blade disposable. It did work better. Then a few years back the wife gave me a three blade for xmas, and danged if that didn't work even better. Last year same thing for xmas, but this time a four blade. Yup, worked even better. I don't know if it's the number of blades or that the blade technology gets better as has been said above, I just know that bottom line is each generation works better than the last for me...

Oh, it's marketing.

Reality is, only the first blade really does anything. The rest of them are there just for show.

The real reason for the new razors all the time is to get you to SWITCH to their brand. There's no money in selling the handles.

All the money is in replacement blades. They hook you with the starter pack... 5 blades and handle for $10... pretty cheap.

Then you go back for replacement blades... $20 for a 5-pack? They're really raking you over the coals on replacement blades.

I just buy the starter packs of whatever comes with the most blades. When I run out, I get another starter pack, and throw the old handle away.

There was a skit on Saturday Night Live,or Mad TV or something about that very thing. I don't remember how many blades that razor had,but it was the size of a tennis racket and the guy had to use both hands to handle it.

I'll stay with one blade, since I only shave maybe 2-3 times a week (to keep the wife happy)Seems like all the extra blades do it clog up!

I've got to disagree, kind of.... While I am far from being someone who goes with gimicks, snake oils, and the latest and greatest I do like my 4 blade razor. I hate the cost of blades but... I'm one of those people who needs to shave twice a day and definitely has to shave daily. Beard comes in dark, fast, and with the consistencey of steel wool. Single blade razors eat me alive. Good steel makes a difference. Single blade razors last me one use, two blades lasts a week, each additional blade adds about a week.

I remember when Saturday night Live did a parody ad for the 'Gilette Triple Track' .' because some people will beleive anything', pitchman Ackroyd said ... guess he was right!

I've been doing this for a while and it seeems to work for me. I get lots more use out of a blade.
