53 jubilee steering

steering wheel moves side to side about 6 inches before any pressure is felt, it does have power steering, is this normal or should i try to adjust steering to eliminate play? Thanks, Tom

Ford NAA (Jubilee) tractors were not originally equipped with power steering but some have been retrofitted with later model Ford or aftermarket PS systems.

Play in the steering gear may be removed by adjusting the sector end play adjustments.

Further advise depends upon what PS system has been added to your Jubilee.

Tom,

When you turn the steering wheel from side to side, does the wheel rise? That is, can you see or feel it coming up out of the steering column? If so, you probably have a bad thrust bearing on the steering shaft. If it does rise, it won't do any good to adjust the sector gear mesh. If it doesn't rise, sector gear mesh might fix you right up.

Good luck,

Tom in TN
