Well I went ahead and got the old beast, 360 auto 4X4. Speedometer says 71,000 mile but maybe 171,000 or since I knew the guy that had it and knew he drive it once or twice a month could well be 71,000 on it. It is very ugly and needs a little TLC to the dump bed but all in all not a bad truck and runs real well. Guess I'll keep it till late fall and see if I can make a few $$ on it when I get what I need done around here

Hi Old, If you are happy with your purchase that is all that matter's. Many times our mind starts to play games with us in thinking we shouldn't have made that purchase. From your information the engine and running gear is good. Cheers, Murray

Rich, I bought a 79 Dodge 3/4 ton 360 four speed new in Feb of 79 and it took until just this spring for it to strand me on the road. Replaced the ignition module on the firewall and away it went again. It has a flatbed on it now cause the box rotted away long ago and I can see the road below me when I pull away the floormat, but it'll still go anywhere. Come to think of it, I have some sheet metal under the floormat. Only recurring problem is it burns up ammeters, light switches and fan switches. First ammeter went up in smoke when it only had 20,000 miles on it. Never have figured that out after all these years. I finally took the wires off the ammeter and just bolted them together. Now the 'ammeter' is observing to see if the lights get brighter when I rev it up.

Has 4:10's so it really likes gas. Jim

Just a bit of a warning. I have found that if the coil is getting bad it will in turn cause the ignition module to burn out. So you might want to replace the coil also

Ya this truck had that problem. The guy I got it from replaced the ignition module 3 or 4 times in a year or so and then tried a new coil when he replaced the last module and that was 6 plus months ago and has not had any more problems other then me buying it LOL. Funny thing about this truck is that my neighbor owned it up till about 8 or so years ago and I worked on it all the time when he was still alive and around this area

Another OT that I have...have had for??? December 1979 I bought a beat up '73 D100. $600. First sorta 'late model' I ever bought. Still have it, the carb drives me nuts, put a choke cable on it, keep a ballast resister and an extra module in the glove compartment with the tools needed, just in case it leaves me stranded. So the coil is doing that??... hummm, we'll have to try that. It's been bored out from 318 into a 340, still OK on gas, the rubber parts and door parts are getting tired..... ya can't get a truck to last 40 years like they did when I was a kid.... come tho think of it, they didn't have 40 year old trucks when I was a kid.... seriously, stuff this old doesn't get the emmissions test that fails more modern cars, much easier to work on, parts are still available and cheap, and if I find a D400 or something bigger, I would get it. you will own this more than I year I will bet on it...

Does it have a Thermoquad? If it does save it but put in an Edelbrock and it will run fine.

?????????????? This truck runs just fine and has for the 30 years I have been around it and working on it so why fix what is not broken??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????///

Wiring skucks on'em,,, I have chased a few around for all kinds failers associate to electrical issues,,, I run a dedicated ground from the battery to the frame,,, from the frame to the engine and from the engine to the firewall to one of the bolts that retain the module,,, like magic I don't have to chase after them anymore... Still tote a ballast resistor in the glove box in my tow truck for a goat pic'em up....

A dead giveaway for a bad module on one of'em is one of the wires will barely glow a test lite ignition switch on,,, mite B the green wire don't hold me to it...

If you are burning up light switches, you are lucky you haven't burnt up the truck yet. Dodges are somewhat known for being lit up by bad light switches, until the 94s came out.
