Ford ????????

i am tryin to work on my old ford and need some help. the decals on the hood have been painted over but i can make out "871 select o speed". but it has a 5 speed manual trans. i think i found the serial number, there is a "860" stamped with "6478" below it with a diamond stamped on each side. so do i got a 860??? please help

The original selectospeeds had problems jumping from "park" into gear. At least a few people were ran over and some killed.
Ford recalled the selectospeed tractors and changed out the transmission to a manual one. I have read this information, somebody else closeer to the situation may be able to provide more detail.

Sorry, but I can't help you with the numbers.

Bill.

Possible sheet metal replaced? Been painted twice?? You know how people tried to make a tractor look like something it was not. I tried to make my '55 850 look like a Powermaster. 850 860 the better tractor anyway.

I would check for casting dates on some other parts of the tractor.According to my book it is a 1954 by the serial number you listed.

Sure you're not thinking about Ford pickups in the 70's? The FMX trans did not have a spring loaded park pawl. They were prone to slipping into reverse, running or not.

hoping to pin down the right model number so i can purchase the right manual. it has a altanator on it it. but i think someone added it. afterwords. i think i have some electrical problems, but would like to get the right manual before i start tearing it apart.

Ford DID recall the early SOS's, but rebuilt them - didn't replace them. Many have been swapped out to 4 or 5 speeds over the last 50 years, though. Couldbe a tranny swap, or a sheetmetal swap.

If someone replaced the SOS from an 871 with a 5 speed from an 860 they probably used the rear axle from the 860 also. There are a lot of differences between the rear axles of an 871 and a 860 such as pinion gear splines and left brake pedal cross shaft location.

I would bet that you tractor is just an 860 with the sheet metal from a 871 on it. You would be able to find more scraped Select a speeds than manual shifts.

Changing the transmissons is possible but it is not just the center section that needs changed. The pto systems are completely different.

Still most likely just a hood switched.

I know a fellow who told me that he nearly got run over by his 6000 while he was unchaining it from the trailer and it was warming up. His first name is Jon, I'll remember his last name later. He lives in Hill NH.
