Found a deal on a Mahindra 48 hp with several implements(Bushhog, disc, back blade and I think something else)-can get for $5500. Tractor only has about 300 hrs on it..Just don"t know what to do..Just never have been SURE about Mahindras. I know they are not a Kubota but seem to be pretty good machines. Comments, opinions??

The whole deal for $5,500 sounds a bit light, but I sure wouldn't be afraid of the Mahindra.

If it is not a scamm, (be mighty careful) it is a great deal. Based on IH castings and designs, they seem robust and able tractors. Every tractor depends on its owner, just as a dog represents the love and direction it was given during its youth. Bad dogs should be put down. Jim

As others have said, it sounds like a scam, if its on Craiglist or ebay or some other internet site. Don't buy unless you can personally inspect the tractor and implements - and not just pictures. Its way too cheap- I bought a 50 hp Kubota with 240 hours and no implements last year- 3 times as much money.

Must be a scam . They are very good tractors i have a friend who has been selling them for a long time and like he says if they werent any god we wuoldnt still be selling them.

Have you seen the tractor or just a photo of a tractor?
Don't spend a dime until you see a real tractor.
Or get a telephone number and have a discussion with a real person in the U.S.

Ya know, 3 or 4 years ago this would be suspicious, but there are more than a few hard up people out there, and if they need 5 grand more than they need a tractor, even if the tractor is worth much more, hey, they want quick cash, not sit on a price until that magic number pulls in the yard. Old timers do that, old timers don't buy asian tractors. If it looks and runs good, sounds like a good price to me. Value has a lot to do with location. Around you, that brand may not bring any more than that. If it was a horsey family, or an estate, hobby farm owner, it may be very good. If it was the small job manure loader on a big cattle farm, leave it alone. These things weren't designed to do agribiz, but to replace the water buffalo on a small asian farm of 5-20 acres. If it did that since new, and that is what you will do with it... Two brains are better than one. Have a freind who is savvy in diesels and hydraulics check it out with you, if he gives it the nod, bring her home.

And btw, Craigslist rules say to speak to the people, and meet them face to face before doing business, I have bought most of what I picked up since going online years ago on CL, and never got burnt, ran into a few morons, but never lost more than a tank of gas to check something out and come home empty. As far as the values, the reason I think it is for real, 'cause here in the northeast, when these came out- 10-15 years ago? mom and pop's, even a couple tractor supply places were selling these and Chinese.. iron bulls? iron ox? for as low as $3500 2wd, so I don't see the red flags here. BTW, as far as Indian stuff, alot of US brand big power have Indian castings, for better or worse....

i bought a '02 Mahindra 6000 in '06 with a loader, new 6' lite duty shredder, new bale spear adapter for loader, and a new 6' box blade for $15,300 delivered...tractor had 147 hours on it...it now has close to 1000 hours and i havent regretted owning the tractor yet...the machines are built solid...only thing you need to worry about is how it was used during those 300 hours... check it out or better yet have a Mahindra dealer look it over.

Go check it out in person before any money changes hands. The fact it is a Mahindra and is cheap. They are not a bad little tractor as long as your not going to be full time farming with it. Under real heavy use they will wear faster than the main lines. You could just have found someone needing the money fast due to hard times.

I have bought allot of things on Craigslist and Ebay in the last year that are deals. Many of the weekend hobby farmer/acreage guys are getting hammered by this economy.

I just got a JD 990 MFWD 200 hrs for $6000. The guy had it advertised for a month and needed the money to save his house from foreclosure. In hard times cash money can make good deals.

Thanks-this is a guy that my Dad worked with for many years. He will not misrepresent it to us. I am going to look at it today if he still has it..

Also, be sure to check to see if it is financed- Most states have "central filing" of UCC's (security instruments for personal property- the equivalent of a mortgage for real property). Through the Secretary of State's office, or some such. Call a machinery dealer you know to find out how to do a search. If you buy it, and there is a UCC filing on it, you get to pay the rest of his contract, as well.
