I was thinking I might have a better shot over on this then there! Most tractor guys know this stuff LOL

Best advice on these trucks on the entire internet can be found at www.oldihc.org .

For the oil recommendation, I'd personally recommend 15W40, if only because of the ZDDP content usually being higher than in most conventional "passenger car" motor oils.

Always loved the classic lines of the L, R, and S-series Internationals...wish you continued good luck with the R-185!

Where can you buy parts? Need to know:

Where are you, I might be able to point you
somewhat in the right direction with the IH. I
used to be a parts manager at an IH dealer with
the full contract, meaning truck, tractor, Cub
Cadet, and appliances.

I have a few ideas, but been a lot of years since
I know for a fact I can still get the parts. My
email is open. DOUG

What parts are you looking for? Chassis parts can be found at almost any parts store. Parts for the fire pumps will need to come from the manufacture of the pump IF they still support the pump. Are the pumps on these truck front mount, mid-ship, or pto. Who made the pumps; Waterous, Hale, Bean or someone else? Waterous and Hale have about 85 to 90% of the market. Support for a Bean pump is iffy. If Parts are needed for the custom build bodys, you are on your own.
Dad and I have four fire trucks. All have mid-ship Waterous pumps. Three are 750 GPM CMB models which Waterous still supports. There are two stage model. One of these pumps is made from Red Brass with built-in Butterfly valves on both the left and right suctions. The other is a 500 GPM single stage model that Waterous does not support.
Do you know what thread the hose fittings on you truck? The one you want is NH which stands for National Hose BUT there are MANY differing hose threads out there because at one time insurance companies require each area or city to have there own hose thread to limit the theft of equipment.
