454 engine oil cooler PIC, part 2.

Here"s a picture of the fitting that came out. Other fitting doesn"t have the probe on it. Called the previous owner, he seems to think the motor is a 92 or 93, in an 89 truck. Fitting is 3/8 npt, and push style clip which is completely corroded.

The question, does the "probe" on top of this fitting open a bypass to force oil through the engine oil cooler, or does it just direct some oil to the cooler.

I am planning on either blocking the ports, or making a short loop.

Answers from the local auto parts guys is usually, "89, hmm, thats old, I"m not sure" and since they can"t find it on the computer they"re lost. I need a good Napa or similar near me.

Thanks in advance,
Rick

Rick, that fitting is EXACTLY what I was referring to and I am 99.9% certain the plastic "probe" plugs a port down at the bottom of the port when installed forcing the oil through the cooler and with it removed and the 2 cooler fitting holes are plugged oil will safely flow INTERNALLY so no external bypass line is needed.

Of course that leaves a small uncertainty the YOU assume the risk of!!!

(Pretty likely that is a GM dealer-only part. I have a brand new one in the bag that a Chevy dealer sold me for a 6.5 DIESEL, (where it DOESN'T fit) and I've assumed all along it was for a big block.)

Bob,

I did a little experiment just to be sure.

1. Original cooler lines hooked up 65psi cold, 35-40psi warm.

2. Made up a small loop with a hydraulic line. Same psi, 65 cold, 35-40 warm.

3. Plugged the ports, again the same, 65 - 35.

There were absolutely no pressure spikes then a drop, as if I dead-headed the pump into bypass.

What threw me off a little in the beginning, I knew the truck had a new motor, but just assumed it was an "89 like the truck, but it is a 91-95, so the oil cooler routing and parts in GMDirect didn"t match.

Thanks again for your help.
