Son 2 , Just Called from Work to Say his Ford Explorer Won't Start ,, He has a ride. Buy now we need tofigure out Why it Wont fire up , It will Crank. My mothers explorer did the same thing Last Winter , And then fixed itself , so far No problems ,, My Guess is a fuelelectric fueltank pump Problem.. is there any way to diagnose problem by turning key on and off and counting flashes like a 89 DODGE ?

WHAT d0 you need to count flashes for... simply get somebody back by the fuel tank to listen for the pump as you cycle the key.

it can be several things but the most common things are fuel pump or sticking idle air control valve. There should be a schrader valve on the fuel rail where you can check for fuel pressure. If the IAC is sticking simply holding the accelerator pedal 1/4 to 1/2 way down while cranking will make it start.Sometimes corosion at crankshaft position sensor and it doesn't pick up a signal, simply unplugging and plugging back in a few times gets it going.

Jim, You didn't state mileage or year. You need to see if it is fuel related or spark related. If you suspect fuel put a stick on the tank and have someone turn the key to the run position. If you don't hear a buzz rap on the bottom of the tank with a hammer while someone else cranks the engine. If it starts it's probably the pump. Don't drive on it if it does start because it will leave you somewhere. Hope this helps. Gerard

Our 2000 Explorer will do the same thing on occasion. The fix we came up with is to hold the gas pedal to the floor while cranking. (I know it sounds couter-intuitive with a modern computer controlled engine, but it works!)

I suspect a XL2Z9H307AL fuel pump.. Presuming
it"s a 112 Wheel base 4.0.. Take the cap off
& have another ear check to see if it"s running.
When key on engine off, if you can hear it then
you"ll need a pressure check at the engine.
From the dealer they are pricey, I sold one last
month that I was very glad to get ride of. Ford
has a list 458.00 I sold mine for 275.00 which
is dealer cost.

that thing has a inertia switch and fuel pump relay that have been known to cause problems too.

Holding to the floor will put it in "Clear Flood Mode " shuts off injectors pulse . Usual culperts for hard start in this case are leaking fuel pressure regulators .Pull the ruber vac hose off Fuel reg ,if it's wet ,reg is leaking .

I had the same problemm on my '97. No start, then "fixed" itself. The crankshaft position sensor was bad. I had already changed the coil pack which cost twice as much as the sensor. Live and learn.
