In 2009 my son bought a new Honda Accord--Loaded. It has now got 50K miles and at 20K he had a brake problem, cost him about $200.00 for rotors! Pads were good! At 35K miles engine started missing and check engine light came on. He took it to dealer and the charge was $279.00.
It also uses 1 to 2 quarts of oil between changes. They stated that was normal!
THREE repair jobs that he had to pay for--and get this----the dealer stated Honda knew of the problems and there should have been a recall, but charges will be refunded if Honda decides to do so!!
To me, this is Unbelievable--looks like they are selling a name instead of a quality product Sad to say that I have a friend that has had similar problems with a new Honda Accord.
I suggested that he contact Honda headquarters and file a complaint. What else could he do?

I don't know about the brake rotor problems, but if it burns that much oil that may well be what caused engine to missfire. Have no ideas what repairs were need to correct miss so can not say. But, it should sure not use that much oil unless he is running a very long oil change period. Honda's are normally very reliable, well built cars. Warranties are so much dealer related that one has to be more careful of which dealer you buy from than the product itself.

What else can he do? Contact the better business bureau, report the problem to consumer affairs, tell everyone you know, blab it all over the internet, and the best thing he can do, trade it in on a GM, Ford, or Chrysler product. I belive that any of the big three have warranties that include brake repairs and replacements.

They said it was a computer program problem and they reprogrammed??

I thought those rice burners were great high quality cars? I guess not.

Any engine that burns a quart every 4000 miles is bad.

I had a Saturn SL1 that burned that much oil every 5k miles, The car was junk. I traded it in in 2007. I got $3100 for it.

Call the Honda HQ and 8itch up a tsunami.

Have had nothing but the best experience with Honda cars. Wife has 2001 Odyssey, over 105,000 and absolutely no problems. Does not use a drop of oil between oil changes. Have 3 friends with similar experience. I suspect you son may not have been up to speed on the oil/filter quality and changes on time. Dont know how rotors could have been bad if the pads were not worn. We got 75,000 out of original pads, and no problems with the rotors. You better look into this a little more, as Honda has a very good reputation. Tom

That heavy of old usage is a sign of a bigger hick up to come - it's time to change vehicles. 09 model you will be up side down on the trade, but get rid of it now. Big bucks once they go into the engine.

Yeah.... Honda sucks I just had to change the engine in an 04 Civic that had 156,000 miles on it. When I asked the previous owner when its last oil change was he looked at me blankly. It seems he only added oil when the red oil light flashed(typical American youth).

Yes Honda brake pad are hard as rocks, and eat rotors. When you change pads the rotors are almost always shot. You warp rotors if you brake hard, get them hot, then hold the brake tight at a stop light.

As for oil use... the one I just fixed used a lot, but it had a 4" hole in the block and was only running on 3 cylinders.

I would like to be like Paul Harvey and hear the rest of the story. We have a 2000 Odyssey sitting in the driveway with 201,000 miles that has only needed routine maintenance, timing and fan belts around 90,000 miles and again at 180,000 miles plus water pump just due to age since it is little more labor while doing the belts, and rear wheel bearings at 190,000 miles. The oil and filter get changed every 5000 miles and it doesn't use a drop between changes.

We also have an 07 Odyssey with 58,000 miles and also change oil and filter every 5,000 miles and no usage between changes. The brakes and rotors still looked good at 55,000 miles.

many manufacturers have an acceptable oil usage figure in the owners manual. Its more than you would think. Its their way out if more than a couple cars use above average amounts of oil.bill mart

IIRC, on the original Northstar engine, GM said that anything up to a quart per 1000 miles was acceptable.

"they are selling a name"

YEP, and a bunch of "green weenies" that don't give a #^*% about the USA are BUYING... and you blame HONDA for the problem?

Sounds like "good old dad" should have taught "buy American"!

(Sorry to vent, but I've got a couple of boys that have been told they can buy any vehicle they want, but if it's not American any problems will NOT be discussed with Dad!)

I spent 10 years as a Claims Adjuster working vehicle service contracts.

We found out very quickly that, in contrast to public perception, Honda, Toyota, and Nissan blow just as many engines and transmissions as any other make, and usually cost about three times as much to fix.

Was a Ford man for 40 years. Now own my second Honda Accord.100,000 on this one,not an ounce of problems. Last Honda Accord, same thing. Also own a Toyota tacoma, 106,000 miles, very few problems. When USA goes back to making cars and trucks instead of overpriced junk, I"ll be a Ford man again, but not holding my breath. What"s the rest of your story.
