My first tractor was a JD G. I bought it in 1963, I was thirteen. I gave $250 for it locked up, used up most of my savings to buy it and fix it. It had just been over hauled but locked up in about ten minutes of running. I torn it down in my Grand Father"s barn, on a dirt floor. Found out that who ever had done the work on it had turned the right main bearing oil line fitting the wrong way. The first time the crank turned it broke the fitting right off. So it had no oil to the right main bearing. I had to have the crank ground. I DID REBUILD THAT MOTOR WITH NO BOOK!!! The horror!!!! LMAO

Yes it is good to have a manual but it is much better to have some common sense. Many have a lot of book/manuals but don"t know to come in out of the rain. ( This was for the thread before)

I used the tractor until I joined the Army, in 1967. It set in My grand father"s barn until I got out in 1979. I got it running again and used it a little. I was farming full time then and needed another more modern tractor. I sold the JD G for $750. Three guys bought it but none of them had all of the money. I had to repo it from the first two. The third still has the tractor.

It is really funny how they took off in value in the 1990s. Any kind of JD G would have brought the high $2000-3000 then.

1952 Farmall H. Bought it in 76.Used it for plowing snow (Farmhand trip bucket) Also used it to haul hog manure. (1500 gal vacuum tank) Was way to much tank for that tractor. So heavey on drawbar that I had to run a log chain from drawbar up around axle housing so as not to bend it down. After pulling it for about 3 years I was changing rear end oil and some bearing pieces came out in drain oil. So I sold it to a guy and bought a 560. That guy ran it just for snowplowing for years and years and never did have any problems with that tractor. He must have known them tractors real good because when he bought it and I told him about the bearing pieces he said not a problem for what he is going to use it for.

First one I owned was a 196? Ford 801/841. My dad and I went 50/50 on it. Still have it and use it. First one I ever worked on was a 194? Allis B I over hauled the engine in it one time when I was home on leave back when I was 18 or 19

When young I often worked on my Father's 1942 AC WC.

The first tractor that I owned is a 1951 Ford 8N with Sherman combination transmission. I still own it and it is the first one out of the barn for many small jobs.

38 unstyled JD A. My dad bought it and a hay rake for $250 in 1972 and gave me the tractor I was 9. Ran pretty well as is mighty hard for a nine yr old to spin flywheel to start by hand though. About 1981 the can blew off of the exhaust one winter. We didn't notice for a while and it ended up stuck, sold it for $100 wish I still had it.

My first tractor was a brand new "60" John Deere that I bought in 1955. It was a '54 model but was held over because it had a wide front and nobody wanted a tractor with a wide front! It also had a 801 3-point hitch on it and a hydraulic cylinder included for $2,230.00. I eventually sold it for $950.00 and now regret it!

I got a 1948 JD a in about 1970 for $100.00 the man that owned it was driveing it it to my shop to get some work dome on it a nether guy hit him from the rear did some damage to the tractor The man was not hurt. i got it from insc co. fixed up and put a daul 250 loader on it.used it for many years till i got a 3020 and a miller loader.sold to a young guy right close to me all it does now is cult sweet corn patch every year

My first was a 9N Ford I bought about 1961. Paid $250 for it. Had been used to pump natural gas wells (salty water). Cleaned her up,had it overhauled ($250) by an old ford dealer, put new "blem" tires all around (another $250),painted it and used her for 10yrs and sold it for $900.

first tractor i worked on by myself was a 8n ford . iwas 11 and my grandad had infosemma bad so he sat on a bucket and talked me thru tearing it completely down(good memories). first tractor i owned was a 1981 tw 20 ford, i was 19.fixed it completely up and farmed with it for 16 years and traded it on ford 8870 fwa.

1951 JD G s/n 48259 was my first tractor.
Sure wish I could find it now.
Other tractor I still have is a 1950 JD B Dad bought new in 1950.
And I use it regularly.

first tractor workedon/drove was Dad's 8n ford.first tractor I owned/ boughtwas a JD730 electricstart dieselI dont own either one now,but wishI did.:(

First tractor I owned and worked on is my 1927 J.D. model D. Bought it when I was in 5th grade 47 years ago. It's 84 years old and I've owned it over half it's life. That makes me old. Left cyl was cracked and I was lucky enough to find a brand new block for $100.00. It's the only JD I have left.

I quess you might say the first one I owned was half of a new 1966 656 Farmall. Had a job in town and loaned dad the money to buy it. In 1971 he gave me his 51 WD Allis, but had to overhaul it and put new tires all the way around.

A rusty looking 1931 JD GP wide front on pretty good rubber. It was Oct. 1954,I was in FFA and needed a project for AG.shop time.It fit the bill just right. I worked on it when ever shop period came up and finished renovating it in the spring of 1955,It turned out real well I thought.Dad paid me and a friend to pick up rocks that spring after plowing and discing was done and we used the little GP to pull a 4'X 8' Stone Boat to haul the rocks to the dump site. It handled the job real well.

My first tractor was a John Deere 40, my daddy gave it to me after he bought a 601 Ford. I can't remember if the JD 40 was a 1953 or 1954 model now as I sold it about 21 years ago. Wished that I had kept it now, it still ran good back when I sold it with a 5' bush-hog for $300.

First one i worked on was a 40 9n, the first one i owned was a 44 Farmall H, Just got my second yesterday, 53 super m. I'll be 20 in 4 days and have 2 that are mine and one thats my paps that i do all the work on.

First one I bought for myself was 1946 H Farmall in 1974 and then a 460 Utility in 1976. I then sold them when I moved to Washington state in 1984 and then I bought a 1958 Farmall 560 gas and that was the start of my current colection which is somewhere around 50 and 8 cub cadets. I really do like the complete Farmall and I.H. product line and curently am a salesman at Case I.H. dealership as one of my jobs.

My first new tractor I bought was new oliver 66 Diesel. Boy what a ringer. The Crankshaft kept breaking. Finally I wrote a leetter to the prwident of Oliver. On day the Block man drove in the yard and said a truck is coming and your tractor is going to the factory and ther will be no charge. It ended up that the main bore was out of line so the crank was flexing so it would brake every so many hours. I found out later it was one of group of tractor that had been parked in vacant lots over Halloween and kids had stared them and ran them till they stopped Oliver had torn them down half-way fixed them an shipped them. It was a battle that I won and the last tractor I owned was a Oliver 1850 Oliver rir me alright.

The first tractor was a Farmall BN. Its was on my grandparents farm since new. Tractor was sitting outside along side the barn for at least 15 years before I got it. My dad and I made the 90 mile trip and brought it home. It was my first overhaul at age 12, I turn 33 next week. I still have it. Use her to pull the spreader through my heifer barn in the winter and rake hay during the summer. Bought a Super M two years later and still run it every day.

Allis B.
Wasn't mine. Dad got it along with the farm when Grandpa died. I had driven it since I was about 8 though.
We had it for a couple years and it only ran on 3 cyls because of a bad valve. I took it in to AG-4 my senior year and did an inframe on it.
Brought the head to Aitkin Implement - local Allis dealer. Dad set up a temp account there so I could get the parts I needed for class.
It seems when I was done and he had to pay the final bill it was about $140. That included a new battery box and a used sector shaft in the steering. He was furious - partly at me for being so profligate and partly at the dealer for gouging. It sure ran nice afterwards though and even he was glad it had been done.

My first "Love Affair" with a tractor was a Case model D on my dads friends farm in Interlaken/Ovid New York..Munson Road if I remember correctly..Right next to an early cemetary [ 1700"s-1800"s]..What a fire breather..

1946 Allis WC, was my great-grandfathers. Still have it. Needed lost of work since it was his only tractor on the farm. According to him, it the tractor sure was an improvement over the two horses he farmed with until he bought the WC.

JD 435D the sixth one off the line. Bought it for $2200 and I had it for about 8 years and. Sold it for $3500 with a 5 ft Bush Hog Squealer. Some collector probably has it now and wants $10K for it.

First tractor I ever worked on waas Dad's 1948 Allis B. I did a valve job and replaced the clutch while I was still in high school. Dad finally decided he wouldn't need it any more at age 94, and Igave it it's first full over haul in 1997. I still own it and it still has the same clutch I put in it in 1958.
Forst tractor I ever owned is a 1940 John Deere H that I bought in 1973. I completely overhauled it and used it until 1999 when I restored it. It was shown at EXPO 11 in 2001 in Berrien Springs, MI.
Nothing like waliking into the barn and looking at these tractors that have been with me so long.

My Grandfather picke up a 1948 JD M in 1955 when we let the horses go.I still have it and still usen it. How many hour are on it? - I do not know. 63 years old and I yes I use it every day. Ed

Fullers Farmalls,
My first tractor that I worked on also was a 1940 9N bought new by my dad. That was about 55 years ago when I was tinkering on it. I don't know where that tractor ended up. Maybe it is the same one that you worked on.)

I'm not sure of the history but If it was in western PA theres a chance. Haha. My pap got if off a guy but before that I don't know anything about it.

I grew up on my uncle's family farm that always had International tractors, first an H, then a W-6, them a new '50 H, then Super MTA. I left farming completly in 1960, moving to California, but came back to Michigan in 1979 and did some farming on my own. I had a Stage II Super M, an H and a JD H. Left Michigan again in 1985 and went back to California where I worked until retiring in 1999. While in California I bought a John Deere GW and an A and restored both of them and brought them back to Michigan when I retired. Now my brother and I have the 2 John Deeres plus a G we bought here and an H and M Farmall and a MM UTU....(our toys).

First one I worked on was my Dad's 8N Ford, not sure what the year was.
After he passed away my Mom needed money so she sold it to a collector. At the time I didn't have room for it, wish we still had that little guy.

The first one I owned I got about a year and a half ago and still have is a late 50's Massey Ferguson 202 Industrial with 102 Davis loader and 220 backhoe. It's been real handy!!! Put lots of work into it but it's slowly paying me back.
