OT.....Red Pine Posts

Hi guys, i do alot of lurking and learning but not much posting. I need to do some fencing in a bad way but am pretty tight on cash right now. Had a guy offer me 100 or so red pine trees VERY cheap. They range from 6-12" and i was wondering if they would work for posts? Are they going to last at all? worth the hassle? TIA, Steve

I"ve got an acre of red pine windbreak, about
40 years old. Some are starting to die. Some
kind of worm leaves the live ones alone, but
gets in the dead ones. You can actually HEAR
them chewing!!. Dead ones go punky and rot
really fast,(and wormy). mine wouldn"t last as
fence posts.I"m in Western Central Wisconsin.

(quoted from post at 07:12:23 04/08/11) Might last a year...or until you can get some better posts in there.

specially if you put em "in too deep" and they get moisture.............

I think if youput gravel in the bottom of the hole, coated them with tar, backfilled and tamped with gravel, then painted the posts they'd last awhile. But, by the time you do all that, T posts would be cheaper.
