Plow Day Pictures

Did some plowing yesterday on my place. We had 13 tractors with two way plows, unfortunately by the time I dug my camera out, everything but Deere's had given up. Plowing out alfalfa/grass mix field, in heavy ground.

That is some nice looking ground. Those JDs should be loafing along with two bottom plows.

Dean

It's clay. Heavy clay. Those tractors are working for all they have to pull 2 at a reasonable depth.

I have some pictures. Here they are.

I guess photos can be deceptive. It doesn't look like clay in the pictures.

Dean

Looks like none of them are completely scoured, either, which will make them pull much harder. And clay isn't the best soil to make a plow scour, either. Mike

Having never plowed with a two-way plow, it would probably take forever for me to get used to putting that left front wheel of the tractor in the plow furrow.

Were still frozen here in Michigan. 36 degrees, and rain / sleet off and on all day.

How does the spinner plow work,? I mean why do you want it to flip or spin over? Is that so you can turn around and go back down the field! Dont wanna sound stupid, but I havent seen many around here. I just have a old Dearborne 2bottom. thanks J

I don't see one like mine there. I've got a Chattanooga 2 way walking plow out in the barn. Hillside turning plow is what the good ol' boys in Tennessee where I bought it call it.

Spinner plows, two way plows, tumble plows, etc.. are common in flood irrigated country. They're the "normal" here. You start on one side of a field, and plow to the other with no dead furrows. One side of the machine plows right, and one plows left. There are many different ways as to how they spin, lift, trip, etc... based upon manufacturer and style.

Here's a quiz. How deep do the roots of a 5 year old alfalfa plant, in average soil go down?
A) 6 inches
B) 12 inches
c) 2 feet
D) 8 feet.

30 years ago local 720&730 diesels with dual on left side would strain to pull 3 16 in kings clay in spring. We always plowed in fall with 4 16

Thanks guys, that makes sense. I read there also called 1/4 turn or rollover plowS,? and in England a "Butterfly" plow. Wow, nice pic. you have weightS on the front of that SMTA?

Thing that amazeses me the most in your pics is, there isent a mountian or hill to be found, alot different from around here! J

My GB Minnemo would pull four fourteens in alfalfa sod, had to chain the hitch and go in low gear at about three quarters throttle. You could actually see the plow beams springing and the front wheels were in the air all the way across the field. Hard to beleive that J.D.s were all that could stay in this dog fight, lol

Thanks for the neat pictures David. Those are plows like I've never seen before. How do you control the single bottom plow on the A, keeping one side up and letting the other down?

Paul

We have a winner.
New quiz:
A) Is it effective to plow 10 inches of them? Why or why not?
B) What is the average annual rainfall in mid WY?

Im not sure what you mean asking, A) Is it effective to plow 10 inches of them? Why or why not?
Effective in what way? I'll shoot in the dark and say maybe not if they spread by rizhomes, maybe they would grow back?? Im not sure, But Id like to know the answer. As far as rain fall in WY I dont have a clue! J

When you lift the rockshaft, both plows lock in the lifted position. Then there is a lever on either side that locks one individual plow. Lower the one you want to plow. It's easier to release the plow, then lower the rockshaft, but you can lower the rockshaft, and then release and drop the plow. If you look at the far left of the picture, you can just see a little bit of the release lever for the left plow.
