starter problems

when i connect the starter and solenoid together the tractor trys to crank, i posted earlier and someone told me that i wired the battery cable wrong so i changed the sides and it still does the same thing,
For more info i bought the 12v conversion kit from here and follow every wire. ??? i dont know whats wrong

and what wire type should i use or part should i use to ground the starter to the solenoid??/

You dont ground the starter to the solenoid, you should have one big wire that goes from the Battery to the solenoid, a big wire from the solenoid to the starter, and one or two smaller wires that plug to the front of the solenoid on a little bolt or two, depending on what style you have, I know on the old ford pickups it didnt matter if it was a one little wire or a two little wire solenoid, seemed to work either way, dont know where them wires went to though, in a wire harness on the fender. But as long as you have the big wires in the rite order it should work, unless you got a bad solenoid out of the box, been known to happen. Bob

Not a Ford expert but some of the old Ford tractor ground the starter solenoid through the starter switch to energize the solenoid and the starter. Your solenoid could also be stuck in the on position.

The starter button on the 8N controls the ground to the starter solenoid. Your solenoid is already grounded through the frame, so you need to un-ground the solenoid somehow and hook a wire to the start button so the it will activate the solenoid by closing the ground.

The other way to do it is to use a standard 6 prong accessory relay (available at any auto parts store) to control the hot wire to the start solenoid. Power in to relay at terminal 86, ground (start button) at termial 85. Power in to load at terminal 30, load out at terminal 87. Ignore terminal 87A. This WILL make it work the way its supposed to. I have wired a couple 8Ns and 800s this way, so it does work. Not original, but sometimes easier than isolating the start solenoid.

Ford tractor solenoids use a ground to engage unlike regular Ford automotive solenoids that engage with a powered lead...make sure you have the correct solenoid...btw...if the solenoid came with the kit,try your old 6 volt sol...it will work fine no matter what polarity or voltage.

(quoted from post at 00:18:17 04/03/11) Why would he start a new post on the same topic?
hat is a very good question for him?! And, Sam, the 8n solenoid is not grounded via the case mounting. Actuating coil receives power via BATT big terminal & ground via start button /solenoid small terminal. No case connection.

You should do a search on the ford forum for the wiring diagram. It's been posted many times. A conversion kit will make no difference on the starting circuit. The solenoid is bad or the wiring is wrong.
