Mother in law was telling of a small animal digging trails in her lawn. They are little trenches about the size for a mouse to run through. They were dug into the surface of the ground under the snow. Someone told her it must be a voyle or voile or something pronounced like that. Anyone ever heard of an animal called that? What is she talking about?

You are speaking of a Vole. It is a short tailed critter slightly larger than a mouse. Very likely it is what made the trails. We also get the trails, sometimes from mice also. Gotta watch out for young fruit trees, they will eat the bark off all the way around, girdling and ultimately killing the tree.
Cats like 'em! So did our old coon hound.

We had problems with them eating peanuts when we planted. Was my job when I was a kid to pour the peanuts out of the sack into a #12 wash tub and swab a kerosene soaked rag through the nuts then pour them in the planter when it got there. It seemed to work. I still hate the smell of kerosene.

Vole. Have tons of them..poison them all year long and I'm just barely ahead of them.

we call em gophers in Texas...big paddle lookin front feet,no back feet to speak of and blind as a bat...cats have been my solution...been years since i had any on the hill where house is...i had a red doberman that would dig after em...trenches she dug were worse than the tunnels...cats are more like snipers...one swipe...one kill.

Don't have them down here, too many fire ants!
Do the trails look like this?

Voles look about like a field mouse to me and our cats love those and they don't destroy everything digging for them like dogs will. Had gophers at a property in East Texas years back, our dog could destroy the whole yard in one night chasing a gopher.
