Young Tractor Pullers

Our association, Power from the Past, southern Arizona, is contemplating having young people participate in our tractor pulls. A local 4-H club has restored a John Deere 40 tractor and would like to use it in our pulls. We would like to encourage the youth to appreciate the old equipment, but our foremost concern is safety. Do any of you belong to clubs who have specific requirements or a minimum age for participation? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Any of the pulls I attend require 16 years old with a drivers license or over 14 with written parental consent. Sam

we allow them to pull if they can back to the sled and control the tractor some parents have kill switches on the tractors .

My club doesn't have a set age but they have to show complete control of the tractor. Our youngest puller I know of was 9yr old and could run the tractor better then 75% of the adults. Also we have a fri night pull just for the youth up to 16 with transfer sled to 4500 lbs

IF THE KID CAN HANDLE THE TRACTOR....they could be a newborn in my opinion. There are plenty of old farts at pulls with tractors that are not fit to pull a tractor....but are not questioned because of their age.....

You would be a lot safer with a garden tractor

Smaller easier to control and an adult can take over a lot easer than a 40

Keep the hitch stock - below the axles

Weelie bars are also a good idea

Cub Cadets are a good choice - the older ones with the hydro lever on the dash are great for an adult to walk next to so they can grab the lever

I'm not a fan of small kids on a 40 in a confined area as a lot can go wrong quickly

My son pulled a hydro cubcadet when he was 5 then went to a gear as his skills improved

Then big tractors in open fields

Forgot to mention that the club - was in had a garden tractor division for the kids

Dead weight pull not progressive

Tractors had to be stock

I agree with some that some old guys shouldn't be on tractors. Most pulls in MD/PA require the drivers to be 16 or 14 with parents permission. But a couple of pulls will let kids pull if they can show they can handle the tractor and they have done really well. One girl was 8 and a boy that was 9. I was on tractors really young on the farm and I beleive if you can handle it then you should be allowed to pull. Just my opinion.

agreed on farm stock only ,, watched a 9 yr old pull a over and under oliver some 30 yrs ago , He Was Careful and Attentive and listened well to his folx and respected the power He was in command of .. , Nice tame pull that went a long ways down the track ,, The little fella was beaming all the while and today is a fine heavy equipment operator ..Personally I would rule that minimum 18 yrs old for hotrods ... that stuff can roll pretty crazy when out of control,,. one more reason why i seldom watch hot rod pulls .//

my son started pulling at 14. you are soposed to be 16 but we knew the people so they let it slide.he has pulled a ford 8000 for 2 yrs now. i think anybody as long as they know how to drive a tractor should beable to pull. very exciting and fun especially when you see kids doing it.
