Super M Amish Style...pic

I saw this tractor at the auction Saturday. It sold for $2600. Note the rear tires. It was an Amish auction. He also had an old Ford with the same setup.Didnt sell it. The little Allis engine went for $300 and it ran like a top.

That rear tire/wheel might make a good front-loading washing machine. You could put holes on the other rear tire for a spin dryer. Yeah, I know. They probably got this all figured out.

So what do the Amish not like. Is it pressurized air or inflated tubes?

We live near the largest group of Old ORder Amish west of the mississippi and its pretty cool to see the steel wheels they have to use now for the high hp tractors im sure it runs into big money but ifn ya wants 150hp on steel ys gots to spend some big bucks for steel wheels havent seen a four wheeled one yet but theres probably on here somewhere.Qute stpry a couple yrs ago big storm went thru destroyed machine shed and there in the back was a big I-H Rotary combine on rubber he had kept it hidden from the Bishop.

So I have heard, they can't ride on air. Some sects allow air in the front tires since they are not technically riding on the front tires. At least they are not out to destroy America.lol.

The area south and west of where I live is heavily populated by Mennonites. Most of the men use modern farm machinery, and dress like the rest of us. The women don't wear jewelry or makeup, and wear only dresses and skirts. Plus a little doily type head gear.

Some began liberating themselves earlier than others. When I was a kid 50 years ago, there was a Mennonite gal that ran around with us. Naturally her religion and her parents forbid her from wearing shorts. So--she'd put on a pair of short shorts under a skirt and after she was out of her parent's sight the skirt came off. Then before going home, the skirt went back on.

I would thing everyting would shake loose on a new 150 horse tractor on steel. This WW2 tracked military vehicle I'm working on has clamps every 18 inches or less on every line and wire on the vehicle because of the jarring from the tracks. Jim

I have heard the same, they say "Only Angles can ride on air..." Thats there deal, I respect them, peaceful way of life, at least there not causing us any harm.

They are still on horse and buggy around here, gas motors to run all of the power tools but no tractors or cars. No electricity and no gas motors on wheels.

Well, I guess you can't fix silly. Can't recall anywhere in anyones bible that talks about pneumatic tires. Nor pulling a diesel powered PTO unit with horses. Or not having telephones, but free to go to the neighbors to use theirs. And ditto hiring someone to be a taxi service, in the very vehicles they are not "allowed" to use. Sounds like the Land of Loopholes, to me.

I know they're nice folks, and good family values and all, but when all is said and done, silly is still silly.

Let the flaming begin. I'm just feeling a little contrary today.

Maybe these would work as a compromise. It would be a good way for the "camel to get his nose under the tent".

On the other hand why don't they just use tracked tractors?

if there was any distance between their fields, the rubber tires may have been rquired by local law enforcement...i know for a fact operating any vehicle on pavement with steel wheels or lugs results in a hefty fine here in Texas.

Was that the Tri-county auction near Arthur, Il? As many as six auction rings going at once. One of my favorite auctions, but couldn't go this time (MIL died). I've seen some of the craziest stuff there. Knew a guy that worked in a tire shop in Mattoon, said some amish bought two new rear tractor tires and cut the beads and part of the sidewall off right in the parking lot before they left. Most of them are good people, but they do have strange ways.

Are you smart enough to make a living farming?
I'm sure you me and and everyone else does some things that are silly to them. They'll be farming
when the rest of us are gone.Actually steel wheels are very practical I have an AC 5040 I only run a rototiller with leave it on year round
friend of mine gave me a set of Amish steel for it about 10 years ago,no flats so far,no cracking or dry rot and they ain't worn down a bit, if they'd of been rubber tires I'd be looking at about $600 to replace them now.So who is the silly one?

The Amish ways can seem a little odd, but for them it is all about not being pride full, and they are suposed to shun comforts.
they can not have phones hook up to the electric grid, because these are all more or less goverment endorsed/suported things, and they are not to join in. Like wise insurance. The Amish do not consider this life we live as all there is for them, just a journey they are on to the next world, with Christ the Lord and savior. We have many Amish neighbours in are area. They never take any goverment money, health care, old age pension, ect. Pay their taxes and their own way, more folks did the same maybe our countrys would not be so hard up. But they will not take up arms to defend their country, do not agree with that myself.
Please escuse my poor spelling. Bruce.
