OT- Amana refrigerator

Amana stuff used to be bullet proof, do they still make good refrigerators? I am looking at A8RXNGMWE, one of their lowest. 400 at HD. The one I have is running too much of the time. There is Just me and I don't need too fancy.

i'm not sure how Amana is these days, but have you tried cleaning the coils and/or defrosting your fridge manually? i had a similar situation with a old chest type freezer...finally decided to replace it...got it out on the front porch and it dripped water for days...neighbor came by and asked if it ran and if it was for sale...plugged it in and 2 hours later it had already shut down at -10*...only time it shut down before was during a power failure.
naturally i'd already bought a new one.

Amana is now owned by Whirlpool. I'm sure someone in Iowa will correct me, but I think all Amana production is now done at the Whirlpool facility in Benton Harbor, MI. I doubt there's any difference internally between an Amana and a Whirlpool.

Amana was bought by Maytag a few years back. Maytag's quality went downhill for many years until they were eventually bought by Whirlpool, which closed down the Amana plant.

The Amana plant is still in production.

But what comes off the loading dock doesn't necessarily say Amana on the box.

I believe the side by side ref. and the Amana microwave are still produced in Amana.

The Maytag plant at Newton Iowa was shutdown amongst all the mergers.

I've got a brother who does HVAC for a living. He doesn't have a single good word for any newly manufactured brand whatsoever. All the compressors are now made in Mexico, Brazil, China or the like.
On a lighter note, it's possible your fridge might just need a cleaning and a shot of freon.

I know Maytag is no longer the old Maytag, but I've had three major Maytag appliances in the last 5 years and I won't buy another. Also, my mom has been fighting to get her warranty honored on her Maytag deep freeze and I guess the only way it's going to happen is if she gives a call to corporate headquarters or small claims court.

Thanks for the comments. Mine is clean.
As for the new ones, I may just watch Craig for a good used one. My thoughts were that for a few dollars more i could have a new one...Doesn't sound that good to me any more.

I know the world's largest producer of compressor's for refrigerators was located in Greenville, Michigan. About 2005 it closed and went to Mexico.

Kruse,
My son and I both have Maytag refrigerators. We both had problems with the defrost board not doing its job. We both found the parts online and saved some dough repairing it ourselves but the aggravation of having that problem will probably sway our next purchase. I can't remember for sure but I think that a small relay on the board caused the problem as the contacts could not take the current that they had to handle. So by saving a few cents on inadequate part they caused a lot of problems for the people with these refrigerators and spoiled their reputation. I have an old Maytag dish washer that has performed flawlessly but don't really know what to buy when I upgrade.

In 2000 we bought all new Amana appliances for our new house. None of them lasted one year without trouble. The cloths washer was down for a circuit board that caught fire internally. We didn't know how bad it was until the repairmen came and opened it up. When I say that I was real mad. That thing could have burnt our house down. Then to top that off, we had to wait three weeks without a washer for the board to arrive. We were 3 hours from Amana Iowa. I had threatened to drive to the factory and demand a new board off the line.

The frig only worked for a year before the compressor went out. They replaced that, and the after that it had a tiny freon leak.

Dishwasher started leaking on the new hardwood floor.

Burners on the stove wouldn't lite on their own.

Dryer bearings went out.

Microwave, quit nuking.....

We eventually moved and refused to ever buy another Amana appliance. I wanted a quality product and bought the best at the time. I figured Amana built in Iowa was good. Boy I was wrong.

We own GE and Bosch in our new home now. So far, so good... But as others have said, nothing is built like it was even 20 years ago. I still have two IH fridges and a freezer from the 40s, that is still cold. Heck, we keep 1/2 a beef in that freezer every year. Wouldn't trust anything new today.

BCnT, be glad you're rid of it. My last chest freezer (was about 25 years old) worked like a charm except for once in a while... when it just didn't feel like running. That was almost worse than it not running at all.

A lot of Kenmore products have a good record for their price range. Available at Sears Roebuck. No I don,t have any connection with them. Just an observation.

You have to ask who makes the Kenmore. Sears signs term contracts with a manufacturer. When contract expires, many times they change to a new manufacturer.

get an LG, you'll know whare it's made then at least (??).
If yours is working good but just running all the time, put it on a timer to run 15 minutes every couple hours. Since it's just you and not a houseful fanning the door, it may be the difference between a few bucks or a few hundred.
