OT Wife's Refrigerator

Try and fix or buy new? That's my question. Wife's refrigerator is 13 years old, and it continually drips water into the refrigerator and freezer on a daily basis to the point where we have to take the items out and wipe down the shelves each day. Pools of water on the shelves, also the freezer will almost doesn't keep items frozen. We've tried cleaning around the compressor and motor area, but it doesn't make any difference. Is a 13 year old refrigerator worth taking to a repair shop or bite the bullet and buy new?
I'm gun shy because last year the dryer was acting up and we paid $175 to have it serviced only to have it die the next week and we had to replace it with a new one any way.

There's a bunch of fridge repair sites on the internet, it sounds like the door flap and drain are acting up, doesn't sound like the cooling hardware is affected.

A uhm friend of mine had the refridgerant leak out of their fridge via a tiny hole in the condensor. He recharged it with propane butane blend and it has worked top notch for the 2 years since.

M Nut have you tried to clear the drain line that runs down from the freezer to the pan underneath? Had a fridge do the same that yours is doing and that was the fix. Worked good afterwards.

Ken, propane makes a good refrigerant, only problem it also makes a great explosive. Get that thing out of the house before it makes kindling of the house and kills anyone nearby.

either the drain line is stopped up,or if equiped with a ice maker in the freezer section it could be over filling..drain most likely.if water doesnt drain away it will refreeze on coils and cause air circulation, cooling problems also.

I'd go for replace with an energy efficient new one. I'd also go for simplicity. Ice makers, water dispensers etc, add complexity and trouble.

I don't know if age is a factor. I've got a Sears I bought new 32 years ago. It quit running last month. After a few days, I unplugged it, vacuumed the dust etc. from around the coils, plugged it back in, still didn't run. Until about 4am the next morning when I got up to let the dogs out, I noticed it was running and cooling fine. I disconnected the ice-maker some years ago since this fridge is our back-up one, I keep beer in it for that after tractor work. So although it's old and probably inefficient, it's a keeper as long as keeps going and beats what it would cost to replace it.

That old and water inside indicates to me that the door seal is leaking badly. Letting the heated air inside the unit and moisture is made . Tape up the door and then wait till next day and see how much moisture is on the inside shelves. BTDT. LOU.

around here the power company pays $50 and picks up the old refrigerators
claim the new ones use much less electricity
I would replace it if you can afford too

Was at Menards last weekend. They had a small-er fridge, dent in the side, for $75.00. If its a backup fridge, something like this might be better.

HTH....don t. .....
