Want to replace the 97 S10. Going with a Ranger.Want a regular cab and V6. Found two similar to my wants.--1.Regular cab,model 2010,trailer hitch, but with a 4 cylinder,6,000 miles $15,500.2. Extended cab model 2008,V6,bed liner,22,000 miles,$16,500.Mileage for each ?
S10 is an extended cab that is only good for hauling stuff that is almost impossible to retrieve.Ranger#2. does have extra doors,so maybe it wouldn't be so bad. Both Rangers are all tricked out like I want and in perfect condition.Have a good ole 97 F250/fwd, so I don't need a powerhouse. Main thing is , I hate to write the check.lol

Regular cab with a V6 is available-special order only-would be new.

Why buy a Ranger? I have a 97, swb 150, V6, Reg cab, 5spd stick, with 55k on the clock. (9000 in the last 10 years). The reg cab in the 150 has plenty of room behind the seat for luggage or golf clubs unless you are 6ft 6 inches tall. Gets over 20 mpg, your Ranger can't do that, and this little truck is wicked fast and good looking. The great (Torreador Red) maroon metallic. Has the stepside box. Never spent a night out of the shop. And you can buy it for 1/3 of those prices.

I have a 98 Ranger 2wd extended cab with a 2.5l 4cylinder with a 5spd manual in it. It's a great pickup and can haul more than I thought. One of the things about this truck, when it's loaded it gets better milage than when its empty. It is the best truck I have owned and have had 0 problems with it.

I can help a little, I have an 01 4wd Ranger extended cab. automatic. It is the heavier than normal version set up to pull trailer, even has F150 trans rather than Ranger trans (factory). Rated for 5500 pound trailer and has 4.10 rear end. nice rig, but only gets 20 mpg on highway. sure rides and drives nice though. At 80,000 miles and 10 years, my only out of warranty repair was a rear pinion seal.

I have two Rangers, both extended cab 4x4's. A 1999 3.0 V6 with 5 speed and a 2002 4.0 V6 with 5 speed. The extended cab with doors is really handy to own. The 99 has about 240,000 miles and the 02 has 105,000 miles. Both get over 20 MPG and both are really great vehicles to own and drive.

Well I'm am a Ford Parts man for over 30 years.
I own 2 Rangers, guys have put out some good
points, haven't heard many of the bad ones so
I am asuming no one from the north east rust
belts have replied. I only know from my side
of the counter it's tough to wear our a 4cyl
ranger, we have many with well over 200K on
them, but they don't look good here in Pa.
I personally like the 3.0 V6 just because they
too have been trouble free, but I like the
power of the 4.0 much better on these Pa Hills.
My 3.0 will only give me 21.5 in the summer
But I love the trk. The 4.0 in the summer get
19.5 to 20, both have 3.73 axle ratio. My
Choice for the 3.0 would be a 4.10, both are
5speeds.. Both have 125K roughly. I've never
touched the 3.0, but the 4.0 I didn't buy new
& have replaced the engine. Without proper oil
changes & without a new theromstat in a 4.0
every year they will get into your pocket. As
for 3.0 & 2.5 they are bullet proof... I
just wish they didn't use salt on Pa. Roads..
Both of mine are in good shape only because I
wash them high pressure twice a year
underneath & spray them with used motor
oil/rear axle oil underneath & inside the
doors.. Makes a mess but it's the only way
they won't rust apart.

i was shopping for new truck back in '06...went to Ford first to keep any relative from spinning in their graves...was looking at the Ranger with 4 banger and auto od...salesman gave me a price and i told him for that kind of money he was gonna have to throw in a rear bumper at least...was told towing with the 4 cylinder would void warranty...had to go to V6 to tow with...just wanted to mention that incase you were thinking the 4 cyl youre looking at mite still have warranty on it.

bought a new 2004 ext cab V-6 Ranger 4X4....rode like a log wagon with steel wheels & 20mpg....got rid of it & bought a used F-150 4X4 with the 5.4 engine that gets about 16mpg. ....best deal I ever made glad to pay for the extra gas to get something that will pull & carry a real load...just bought a 04 Chevy 2500HD to pull my AC puller & it might make me change over to being a GM man LOL...Kent

Leonard,

I'm probably missing something here, but how in the world does your truck get better mileage loaded? I bet I'm not the only one that wants to know your secret.

The same way that the guy with the 4.10 rear end in a Ranger still gets 20 mpg.
