O.k. heres what has happen .. I went to Co-op to get some chicken feed .. got the ticket and start up the suburban and move it over to the dock to get the feed { 100 feet } ... shut it off ..
Now the TROUBLE .. went to start it and NOTHING.. check battery cables , they were tight so try starting again .. SMOKE came out from under a box on firewall ...{ I think } check starter and it was better warm to touch .. so I figure the starter went bad ...
replace the starter .. now I don't have any movement in gauges or the beeping { when you leave key in } and started still is nothing ..
going to lock it up and the auto lock doesn't do anything ...
WHAT did I DO ?? where do I start trying to find the problem ??
I'm hoping it's behind the box on the firewall .. looks like a coulpe of bolts hold it on ... It was getting dark and I thought the box said something about fuel pump relay and something else but couldn't read it ..

ANY IDEAS will be appreacate ..
going to take box off firewall and look .... anything I should be looking for ???

SORRY for long post ...

Mark

Assuming you reconnected the battery cables after replacing the starter, I'm thinking it's a fusible link. If it goes, EVERYTHING shuts down.

I had a similar problem but my 92 k2500 didn't let any of the smoke out though. Battery is fully charged, starts sometimes just fine, other times it acted like the bat. was completely dead. Get out pop hood, pull on the positive cable to starter towards the radiator, see if it starts, repeat until it starts. One of those deals where it magically fixed itself and I haven't had a problem for six months, the bat. stopped discharging when it sat for a long time as well. I suspect that cable has a bad spot in it, grounding somewhere it shouldn't. That has been my similar problem, not much help though. Sorry

(quoted from post at 00:04:51 03/24/11) O.K. where do i find that ??

they are right where the smaller wires went onto the starter solonoid, they have a small plastic block or tag couple inches up, i bet if you pull on the eyelet they will pull into two

As that puppy is worth about $2000, and gets about 12 mpg gas mileage, i'd say you ought to take it out to the local cannon club and let them have at it.

A fusible link is normally attached to one of the battery cables on the battery end.

They are covered with a rubbery jacket (as opposed to a plastic one) and many times have a ring terminal on the end.

A quick chec is to try and stretch the link..if it is smoked the rubbery jacket will stretch where the break is. Their function is exactly like a fuse.

I agree with those who say it"s probably a fusible link. On that truck, most of them are under that black cover on the firewall, not at the battery or the starter. First, check to see if all the nuts on the studs of the bus bar are good and tight. Then pull on the wires, one by one, to see if you have a burned fuse link. Be sure to replace a burned fusible link with the correct type of wire. The length of the fusible link matters, so make it the same length as the one you replace. Also, check your wiring harness for chafing or damaged insulation, especially around sharp brackets and such.
Good Luck and God Bless

THANKS guys for the help ... we got it fix today .... a wire burn thur behind the box on the firewall .. it look like it was pinch once ..that's where it burn thur ....
