Hello
Is there more than one engine for this tractor? I am going to look at one with a miss.
The owner has had the injectors rebult, but it still has a miss on one cylinder.
I will have a look at it next Wednesday, never worked on it before. 4 cylinder he said.
Any ideas what to look for? I"m suspecting low compression or a tight valve.
Guido.

if you mean a 1959 john deere 8020, then its a 6 cylinder detroit diesel and thats the one and only engine they put in all 100 of the tractors.

Hello jd adict,
I have not seen the tractor, if its a Detroit Diesel I am familiar with them 2 strokers.
I may have the first number wrong, his friend tells me its a four banger.
I will find out next Wednesday I guess.

From the factory the 8020 was only ever fitted with the Detroit 6-71; 6 cylinders and rated for 215 HP.

A miss in one cylinder could be low compression from a worn or improperly adjusted valve(s), or a busted piston ring. Another possibility is when the injectors were replaced the fuel racks were not properly re-synchronized.

Hello Bob M,
I hope its a 6/71. I have worked on a few of those beasts. The highway version was rated at 238 H.P. I guess I'll have to take the DD tools when I go as well.
