I"m wanting to install a hand pump on my existing well for emergency use during times of no power.
I found a couple online, but was interested to hear if anyone has done it and what to look out for or tips to make it work better.

It's possible. T- fitting from end of the pipe at the top of the well, with a Check valve in line to hold the water to the top of the T. Keeps from priming the pump over each time water is needed. We bought a small gas generator to take care of that problem if it occurs, other wise that is what we would need to do with our well. We even have a hand pump(leathers are dried out but still available. HTH Regards LOU & VICTOR.

water level needes to bee round 23 feet for the small cheap hand pumps, if water level is below 23 feet you will need the bigger hand pump with a working barrel that goes down the well bout 3" by 2 feet long not cheap, round 6 or $800.00 dollars for pump and barrel either pump will need their own water line down the well. can do it with the small pump in a 6" well but don't think you would be able to get the 3" working barrel down a 6" well if you have any other lines down in it.

When I was a kid - we had a neighbor who had a drilled deep well with no pump in it. He had a simple little roof over the well, with a well pulley, and the bucket looked like a piece of round galvenized downspout about four feet long. It had a round ball in the bottom of it. He'd drop it in the well and the ball would rise up letting the "downspout" fill. As he raised it, the ball would seal the bottom and hold the water. He'd drop the bottom of the "downspout" in a five gallon bucket - that would dislodge the ball and allow the water to flow into the bucket. I've hoisted a lot of water out of his well in my younger days.

It would NOT work if a pump/lines were already installed in the well.

I'd like to find one of those "downspouts". That's the only live one I've ever seen.

Lehman's, the Amish store in Ohio, has them in their catalog for upwards of $100.

If our grid ever goes down, from trying to charge all these electric cars, I'll get thirsty before I get one made.

Bison pumps are expensive. If the water level is high enough in a drilled well you can use a common pitcher pump. All imports now and some are junk. They use old tire rubber instead of leather in the pump.I bought a new Columbiana brass cylinder pump at a yard sale fo 5 bucks.I put it on the well April thru Nov.
