Omaha Nebraska, 5.5 state, 1.5 city, NOW we just got added a 2.5 restaurant tax that is figured AFTER the other taxes-so a tax on a tax. Don't know how that is legal, but they say it is. There is, however, no tax on groceries!

6% in Pa.

Why does government presume it is entitled to tax everything? Goods, property, wages, fuel, services.

Now in Pa they're going after the natural gas drilling that has sprung up with the marcellus shale deposits.

They're never satisfied.

6% Sioux Falls, SD
State of SD is 4%
Each town can add up to 2% to the state level. There also is a tourism tax on certain items and the restaurant, motel and booze tax also. No state income tax or personal property taxes, just real estate.

Forgot the 2% excise tax on contractors. That is figured on the tax you pay for the goods also so it is a tax on the tax.

MN has a very complicated deal where the state gets a cut; DNR gets a tiny cut; each city can add a cut; there are county wide cuts to pay for baseball stadiums and hockey stadiums; they are discussing an extra one to fund a football stadium.....

So there is no longer a set statewide fee. It depends on the city & county you are in.

It hovers at 7.75% or some such, depending.

We have 15% HST. Harmonized meaning Federal and Provincial Sales taxes combined into one, with the Provincial actually taxing the Federal tax.

No sales tax in Montana except for some sort of resort tax in a few vacation areas. We have real estate tax, personal property tax, and income tax.

Tennessee No state sales tax on anything to do with the farm... State and county % 9.25 on most things but tops out at about 5 % on anything over $3200.00 complicated sometimes. Good thing about Tennesse is NO individual income tax. report came out not long ago we share the 4th lowest tax burden in the 50 states. Only Alaska, Hawaii & one other state I am thinking South Dakota have a lower per capita tax burden.

13% HST on basically everything in Ontario. Excludes bakery goods 1/2 dozen and over, bread, milk, basic groceries. Ice cream(and cones) for whatever reason are excluded.
Farm stuff you get it all back but pay it initially. Actual federal tax is 5%(GST)and provincial is 8%(PST). There are few provinces that pay only GST, Alberta being the only one I can think of. HST is at different rates in each province. According the Rev ON. Gas tax is 14.7 cent/litre. Propane at 4.3/litre. No tax on coloured fuel.

MA is just under 7%, 6 3/4 or some stupid thing.
There was a ballot initiative to remove our income tax last fall. I'm in favor of the idea but they didn't have any plan for what to do with the billion dollar hole in the budget. I'm against big government but I'm anti-bankruptcy too.

I think sales tax is probably the most fair tax there is, you want stuff you gotta pay tax. People with more money tend to have more expensive stuff so they pay more tax. I'm also in favor of luxury taxes, you want alcohol or smokes? Well you can help pay for hospitals and police and whatnot.

I'm not a big fan of income tax, it encourages people to make less money and in a way encourages welfare.

As Phil said 6% in PA, however there is state income tax, local school property tax, a township property tax, a township earned income tax ,a township Emst tax (if you work in my township, you pay 52.00 a year), a per capita tax 10.00 because your alive and a county property tax. WHEW!!

It's 6% here in MD and just across the state line in Delaware there's no sales tax. That's because the Dupont family contribute a lot to DE's economy. Chemicals and explosives. Hal

It marches to the tune of 'if you want welfare, police protection, fire protection, enviromental protection, super modern education facilities with 3 million dollar PIAA approved sports complexs so every kid can be president or a star quarter back and no kid is left behind, smooth roads for your fancy SUV and the list goes on. Somebody has to pay the fiddler

4% New York State + 3.75% Jefferson County tax.
There are exemptions for most unprocessed food and other things. Also for Farm use.
I personally think that sales tax is one of the most fair taxes there are. If you don't buy anything, you don't pay anything (unlike property tax).

19%
Germany. No sales tax in the PX and Commissary but the commissary has a surcharge and the PX is priced to make up for it.

Dave

6% in Michigan, and we also have income tax, and property taxes for local governments, and schools. Michigan"s sales tax is not charged on most groceries, and some other items (very few others.)

Well hopefully the rich won't have to. I can't wait for congress to pass unlimited corporate donation for political candidates.

8% here in New York, I hate it because I have to collect sales tax for my business then turn it in to the state,, and NY says there broke??, every business in NY that sells a good or service collects sales tax, and turns in to the state, so why are we broke? weres the money going? There are all kinds of fine lines, lawn mowing is a taxable service, but putting in a new landscape is a capital improvement, so no sales tax, the customer has to fill out a capitial improvement form, which I have to keep on file. Deleware has no state sales tax at all.

There are a few cities, that charge income taxes. Detroit is 2.5% residents and 1.5 for nonresidents working in the city.

If you barter, swap, or trade with your neighbors, it is tax free. Back in during WWII and rationing the called this "black market"

That's the way to go!

Gene

I just had a submergable pump put in my well.If I bought it and installed it myself I had to pay sales tax - if I had a professional do it then it was an upgrade and no sales tax. Typical New York BS.

Yes its absurd, I mean I am just 1 small bussiness collecting and turning in sales tax to NY, you drive down a road and see shops, malls resturants, auto parts stores ect, ect all collecting sales tax and sending it to the state. How can the NY be broke? Thats not including state income tax. As they say, two things in life are gaurenteed, taxes and death. J

unless you live in Allegheny County -- listing one it is 7% there I don't go to Pittsburgh Mills Mall for that reason. I'm only 20 mile away

Tax free for farm items and food, 5 1/2 percent on all other items in grant county wisconsin, I think it veries by county!
Tom

Bull.

Every day in the local paper I see taxpayer dollars going to organizations to and fro in the form of grants, subsidies, etc. Big dollars.

They spend like drunken sailors because they can, and so far we can't stop them. It can't, and won't, continue for too much longer.
It can't be sustained.

West Virginia, 6% sales, only 3% on food, course we have property, real and personal, income taxes, etc

Charlie,

Your state is probably like Mn, if you buy the pump and install it yourself it is considered a retail sale. If a service company installs it, it is then considered part of Real Property and not taxable until you sell the land or house. The same goes for kitchen cabinets and many other additions or repairs.

7.9% in my county, as high as 8.5 in the larger counties. No sales tax on food. No state income tax. Highest gas tax in the nation. Real estate taxes run about 1.2% of value per year.

Newest big thing around here is skyrocketing "fees"- stuff like the cost of recording a deed, which has gone from $8 to $62 in about 10 years. These can be raised by the legislature without a vote of the people.

Man are you guys getting off lucky. 9.7% in the city or county in AZ. It may vary by a few tenths in places, but very seldom less than 9.7%.

We also have high property tax and income tax. That's so we can give away tax breaks to company's that even get 30% off the going labor rate.

No wonder the state is broke!

T_Bone

KY-6%, none on food, prepared food is 10% (tourist tax brings it up to the 10% but if you're a local you get to pay it all the time)
Tax on about everything else, most are low they just get you with quantity.

Well, we just had, in 2008, unlimited contributions from unions and communiuty organizations/non-profits; that bought and paid for the worst administration this country has ever endured. Given that we have a free speech amendment in our constitution, why should anyone's speech be stiffled?
