OT How much is enough?

This Jan I finally got a 2 year NRA membership. That was roughly $150. Quite a bit of money (to me) but between the work they do, and the small discounts received at local gun shops I felt it was worth it. I just went through about a months worth of junk mail, and there are three letters from the NRA begging for more $ to fight this battle, and that battle. Feel like I paid to be agravated! Any way enough about me how was your day.

Typical of about any organization nowadays. And the most aggravating part is that the request is not from the organization directly, but is actually from a fund raising company that will keep about 80% of your donation and forward the rest to where you actually intended it to go...

Yeah, NRA is a very persistant fund raiser.. They'll be after you to go life member, then upgrade that, and on and on. They've kind of given up on me though. Several contacts, I told them I was unemployed, unable to give, they have slowed way down on requests.

You want to see persistant, just send back some mailing from Publisher's Clearinghouse.

Why $150.00 for 2 yr. membership?? only cost me $70.00 for 2 years. I get all the begging letters for money, I send back the postage paid envelopes emty, trying to help out the post office.

I am also an NRA member, I have been for 13 or so years, I joined after Slick Willy kept shooting his mouth off about us gun owners.
A 1 year membership was $25 or it used to be, Where did the $150 come from?

I agree that they beg for money alot but I throw that crap in the garbage. They do have contests to win guns if you pay to enter.
Every 4 years I renew my membership, basically every year we vote for president.
The NRA is great way to fight the left in the government.
Dont let that BS junk mail from the NRA deter you from the real reason for joining, which is standing up for your right to own a firearm and protect yourself and your family. And legally keeping that right.

$150! you must be getting both magazines. that's the reason I am still a member, I like the rifleman mag. I don't agree with all their policies but they work hard at protecting us gun owners. As far as the excess mail, I love it, I'm retired from a paper mill, own a tree farm, and have family in the paper industry. Besides the postal service needs some business, no one writes letters anymore with email and we do most of our business online.

GUN GURU: I'm fairly "LEFTward" in most things, but certainly respect and "defend" your right to own firearms. I have several in my home.

Let's NOT get into a whizz match here in this foruum.

Rick

I have been a life member for years - the best part is the mag. When they send me their request for $$ it gets used to start a fire in the shop stove.

IF you keep an eye on NRA promotions through the year you can buy a life membership for 300 dollars.

Don't complain. Here every firearm is registered. You have to spend a small fortune to take classes before purchasing and another course before hunting.
Any firearm shorter than 26 or so inches or with a barrel shorter than 18.5 inches. Is restricted and can only be used on an approved target range. That is after after your complete another $$$ program. And lock the firearm away separate from ammo.Even a trip to the gunsmith for service requires a special permit.

I have joined the NRA 4 different times, between 1988 and 2000 or so. I would send my money, and never get the Membership package or any magazines, BUT, I would get tons of letters wanting a donation so Ted, nnalert, or Chuck would not come knocking for our guns. When I would call to see where my magazine, etc was, I would be told that my address was not compatible with their mailing system, so I would not be getting the mags. And I lived at 3 different addresses during that time, so it was not just one oddball addy.. But, they were able to send all the requests for donations..

I stand behind the issues the NRA supports, but no longer have a membership..

I agree, we need the NRA but I made the mistake of sending extra cash once, I'm sure they spent all my money trying to get me to give them more. So I am not a member at the present time, but I will join again. The AARP is the same deal. Vic

I joined when I was 16 years old and paid'em yearly for 4-5 years, then I become a life member. I'm 71 now and they've never missed sending me my rifleman magazine each month.

With that said, do not ever feel guilty when they ask for money, and in a few months you'll be able to let it slide off just like snot on a doorknob.

I have been a life memebr for 45 years--some of the best money I ever spent. It was $125 at that time, I think. I send them some money occasionally, but certainly not every request. If not for the NRA, we would have gun laws like B&D is talking about.

I think it was 15 bucks a month when I joined NRA over 30 years ago. Then they had an offer for a life membership, I think it was 200 bucks and you could split it over four payments or something like that. That was the last money I've sent them. Now I would feel a little bit guilty, but that was the deal they offered. The NRA is always asking for more money, it doesn't matter which party is in office, they always have some crisis that I need to chip in prevent.

The NRA is, without a doubt, the single most effective lobby in the US. But I don't care for its incessant fundraising to support a bloated DC staff.

Good post gun guru.

You're right, we can't be dissuaded by their persistent fund raising efforts although I have to admit that I too had not renewed my annual membership right away a few times out of frustration because of their efforts. I've even complained many times on the phone and a few times in writing but the bottom line is that even if the NRA wastes some of our money that we contribute on more fundraising or administrative costs, that no one else is fighting to protect our 2nd amendment rights as diligently or effectively as they are.

Here is an interesting link where $125 would have purchased a 5 year membership, I too wonder how it cost $150 for 2 years.

Consider supporting the NRA an important step in preservation & it costs money to do it. I've been a life member for several decades. There are still occasonal drives almost every year where an upgrade to life is in the $300 to $400 range. The barrage of solicitations asking for money does get aggrivating & most of the time these get thrown out without being read. I usually send small contributions three to four times a year. One goes to the NRA, one goes to the PVF, and one or two goes to the ILA. Set your own limits and ignore the rest of the requests.

I can't believe that anyone would donate to the NRA. If I need a gun or two then I probably already own them. I don't live in this great fear that someone is going to break in and kill me. If they did I'd probably be asleep at the time anyway so what good'd it do? Its like welders, you've got your arc and maybe your mig. Thats all you need is 2, and you've got to go out of your way to get them when you need them anyway. Same way with guns.

The reason for supporting the NRA isn"t that someone is going to kill you. It"s that politicians often don"t see your rights as important. Some actually fear you having that gun. Not that you"d use it against them, but they fear you having that option non the less.

Are you saying if in the middle of the night somebody broke in you couldnt get to a shotgun in time? I sure could, the gun cabinet is right next to the bed. Open cabinet, grab shotgun, point, shoot. Just that easy.
Now I am thinking about putting a gun rack on my tractor so that if a coyote, or crook, or grizley bear ran up to me I could get a shot off.

been a LIFE member for 45yrs.....don't like their fund raising most of it goes to file 13 ...but they are the main reason the lefty gun grabbers are kept in check....Kent

I agree, the NRA is a good part of the check and balance system, but anyone who sends me too many requests for money, as the NRA did. What bugs me is that if you belong to a rifle range or shooting club, they make you be a member of the NRA, thus subjecting yourself to all of the junk mail.

Home invasions are common now .My Border Collie has better hearing and will raise hell if he hears an unusual noise at any time.He likes to play chewing on my shoe and will make a grab at my arm and crotch if I try to pull his tail.No one can get in my truck if he is in there.
