1949 Ford 8N Tractor

did this tractor come from the factory with a 4 speed trans?? My friend has one, and is being told its not factory... Thank you in advance for any info on this matter.

I never saw one that did. Unless you count reverse as a speed.

9N and 2N had a three speed transmission. Straight and original 8N had a 4 speed. Sherman HI-LO's were available to double the number of speeds.

That is what I was thinking, 9n and 2n had the 3 speed trans, 8n has a 4 speed.

my 8n has four speed tranny. the fnn thing ran great all winter know its into this flooding crap. new needle and seat no better waiting on new floot old one seems fine????????? gerald

The Hi-Lo trippled the speeds giving you a low, direct and high. The overdrive as was called gave direct and overdrive and the underdrive and I have never seen one of these gave a low and direct and both the over and under doubled the speeds. the Hi-Lo was most desireable but the others realy gave a set of good working speeds that was not avaible without them.
