Niebhor's passing away

I lost a wonderful neighbor Monday morning to cancer. He was diagnosed with cancer last July. He was a lifetime farmer (former dairy farmer) his entire 70 years. He was a good farmer in my eyes. I was very proud to have known him all my life and especially as fenceline farmer neighbor. We would visit at times over a soda and help each other as needed. He has 2 grown children. The son lives about 100 miles away with a good paying job in the big city. I wonder what will happen to the farm now? Seems like when parents pass on, some people get extremely greedy and want to cash in, especially when land is going for $5000.00-$7000.00 an acre nowadays for prime southern Minnesota farm land. I hope the son continues to farm. It would really hurt me to see someone else drive tractor/combine across these fields. Rest in peace Tricky Dick.
You will be deeply missed.

youre so right, the young guys 18-25 are the ones I wonder about, they (for the most part) dont seem to take any of grandpas knowledge to the field with them.

I agree most of the 18-25 year olds dont know a thing about small farming nowadays. Im 19 and have taken over my grandpas farm ground that he farmed for 20 years or more. I have all older equipment but it has already been taken very good care of, and im goin to school for crop sciences and agronomy. I wouldnt trade it for anything

had similar situation here with the neighbor across the street, then his wife passed 3 weeks later. We really liked them. Grandson moved in and took over - he was about 23 at the time - full time farmer - hardest working kid I have ever had the pleasure knowing.

good to hear that from a young guy, the thing i notice most is lack of waterways, pushing the ground too hard to produce, no rotations, and way too much glyphosate application. I hope in your ag classes they arent trying to just push chemicals down your throat, dont get me wrong Im not organic but at least follow the label and diversify your crop protection program. Good luck this spring, if you need any suggestions Im sure plenty on here are willing to help.
