I would bet if every 18 wheeler in the United States would shut down today that we would have reasonable fuel prices by Friday!

Of course we would. It is simple supply and demand so if the demand went down then gas would go down. The worse problem would occur however because the products that trucks move would go up alot more since the amount of work fuel provides disproportionatley moves alot more products.

corn shouldn't be 7 dollars a bushel,or iron 300 a ton either....
I want to buy beef for 79 cents a pound and pork for 59 also......

As a retired 35 year teamster driver I can tell you you can't get two truck drivers to agree on one thing. Yet alone a bunch of them. Thats just been my experince though. But I do like your idea. Like the other poster said, how about getting everyone involved.

We have plenty of our own oil, if the environmentals and politicians would let us get it. Then build some more refineries and tell the Arabs to go screw themselves!

Getting truckers or farmers to agree on anything would be as difficult as hauling bullfrogs in an open wheelbarrow.

From what I have learned, there is no [b:0e4a03ae66]supply[/b:0e4a03ae66] problems to meet our demands. It is the fear of the growing unrest in the Middle East and Africa that is raising the fuel prices. I think we can expect 5-6 dollars a gallon,..after all, external_link himself said two years ago that he wouldn't be surprised to see gasoline go up to as high as 9-12 dollars a gallon. Oh, he also said you can save gas simply by inflating your tires,..remember that? What an "American Idol" election that was to get him elected!

According to the talking heads last night on the news, it has moved beyond supply and demand. There is more pension and retirement money buying oil futures now than are oil companies and that is what is driving the price up. So while you are paying more at the pump, your making more on your pension fund investment-that's if you have one anyway.

I've heard that only about 15% of our oil comes from the middle east. Seems to me that it would be real easy to cut that out. My '08 Ford dually diesel gets 14-15 mpg at 70 mph. If I drive under 60 mph, it gets 22 mpg. The speed limit on most interstate highways is 65-70. See my point? I realize that oil price is determined by the market, but if demand went down, it wouldn't matter what the towel heads did.

No, all you would have is empty store shelves, if a truckers strike lasted any length of time then you would have mass lay offs and truckers going broke. The economy runs on cash flow, the average business, large or small, has very little reserve cash to tide the business over in times of loss of revenue.

Afraid not. All they have to do is wait for tomarrow for all the trucks to start rolling again. Oil companys pockets are deeper than ours so they can outlast us.

just wondering how soon our military will be lining up at the pumps with our enemies to fuel up ?
save a lot of back shipping .

I disagree with you on this point. If their were no mail, no UPS no medical supplies, I would almost bet if you shut down today, fuel would be where it should be by the week end. Trucks are the key that turns this country on, all our rails do is haul coal, and you know they are not paying the premium that we are for fuel..just my opinion,

We tried that a while back - remember the '70s?

Nationwide 55mph speed limit. Was a hard pill to swallow. Many (if not most,) drivers ignored it, especially on the freeways, and expressways. I know it was real hard for those of us who were used to freeway speeds to slow down. Seemed like we were taking forever to get anywhere, especilly when every trucker and other driver was blowin' your doors off. IN SHORT, IT WON"T WORK!

Probably the only thing that will drive fuel usage down is higher prices, and we're sure getting that. Problem is that many of us have ALREADY made significant cuts in our driving habits and driving, and MORE cuts are very hard to make.

I'm so sick of driving like a little old lady. I could SCREAM!

How about if every farmer would shut down, look at the deisel that would save. I bet there is about as much or more fuel being used by farmers then by truckers. According to a 1995 report there is more oil under the northern plain states, Canada and the Rocky mountains than all of Asia. That was before the latest Bakken discovery. Accoding to the latest oil news we get the Bakken has more oil in it than Saudi Araiba ever had. Now they have the Three Forks layer under that. We have more oil in north America than all of Asia. How come we are still buying opec stuff?
