Taking out CRP

Wondering what peoples meathods are on taking out CRP. Just use a disk? Use a plow then a Disk? Let me know what you guys found that worked good.

Depends a little on what your CRP stand looks like. Here in Central KS the CRP can get so rank you couldn't begin to make a dent with a disc. Some guys around here are burning it off and then either working it or spraying it when it starts coming back. I know in drier regions such as western Ks, or Eastern Co it is not as thick and discing may work a little better. Just a couple of thoughts. I'm sure it will vary depending on what part of the country you are in. Bob

I am in western Iowa, the brome grass is about knee to waist tall. I will burn it first then hit it with a disk. I think this should work.

In western ND I had 160 acres that had to come out of CRP. I have no tillage implements sized for my 4X4 Versitle, only an air seeder. I do still have all my grandpas 14 foot stuff he used in the 1960's. Cows were on it last fall so not to mutch trash on the surface. In train I hooked a chisel plow with twisted spikes , a disc and finally a field cultivator. It left a great seed bed. I got about 1/2 done before I had to leave. This spring I never got around to breaking the remainder. I just sprayed and planted. I had fewer weeds and a better crop in the stuff I didn't break.

I live in SW Iowa, around here they shred it off on the fall and spray it with Round-up then no-till in the spring. Our CRP comes out in the fall of 2012 and is rough in spots from badgers. Not sure what we're going to do.

Nothing works "good" when it is full of pocket gopher mounds. I have plowed mine, then disked, then field cultivated it 5 or 6 times to get it leveled out. I wanted to get it smooth since I plan on seeding alfalfa this year. (plowed up and planted corn last year)

My back and hemrroids will never be the same.....LOL

A friend of mine says a heavy offset disk works good as well.
