OT: Road Oddity #2

Travelling north on I71 north of Columbus, OH, two lanes of traffic at or above limit, everything moving well over the rolling hills. Abruptly, both lanes filled, brakes lights flashing, speed about a fast walk. Happened to end up behind two semis, one in each lane, side by side. No big deal there was vehicles bumper to bumper as far as we could see. Now the amusing part: there were "smarter-than-the-rest-of-us drivers creeping along the shoulders trying to get ahead, but the truckers moved slowly over, blocking the b@#$%. both were doing it and one time they got so far apart, a car started to squeeze between the trucks. When they saw that, they quickly started moving back together just enough to not allow that. I was cheering them and laughing as there is few things that irk me while driving than the folks moving down an empty lane depending on someone to let them in at the bottle neck. This went for 5 miles or more, then suddenly the traffic picked up speed, spread out and there was absolutely no evidence of an accident or construction or heavy traffic on ramps that might have caused this.

They had a big stink hereabouts several years ago when a group of Omaha police officers were going to Grand Island for some kind of meeting/training.

West of York, NE, on I-80 where the speed limit is 75, two of Omaha's marked police cruisers took it upon themselves to drive side by side at 55 mph, 20 below the limit. Apparently they were laughing between the two cars about what a traffic jam they were creating behind them.

Needless to say, Nebraska State Troopers on the scene were not amused, nor were Nebraska State Patrol HQ or the Omaha police command.

Can't recall what the final outcome was, if it was ever publicized, but they certainly didn't do anything to enhance the image of the Omaha PD.

I have often wondered what causes that and in years past have had that happen while going through Kansas City. Traffic slows to a crawl but never does completely stop. No ramps for incoming traffic either.

There has been incidences of two trucks holding everyuone back as a drunk is swerving all over in front of them and they are waiting for the cops. Probably not the case this time, though.

A very similar thing happened to me in Nov. 2007. I was coming home from a service trip with my boss and another engineer. A *ickhead in a semi was swerving all over the road to avoid being passed. Traffic was moving at 30MPH on an interstate. It was interstate 69 between Flint and Lansing Mich. I was pizzed off.
Did you get the license #s to the 2 trucks that were doing this?
It is Schitt like that as to why people hate truckers. The 2 that did that should be held accountable such as: A ticket, a fine and a special call into the dispatcher of the trucking company....because it is costing them money too with a truck that is not getting to the destination in time.

#1 The driver that comes screaming up past you, just to slam on the brakes and cut across two lanes to make his exit.

#2 The driver who upon entering the highway will cut out across 4 lanes just to get to the left lane. Of course this is done at 25 under the limit with everyone one else hard on the brakes.

As previously stated these two types of ignorant pricks need to be run off the road and given a thrashing.
I don't care much either for #3 The overly righteous ignoramus that parks in traffic at the speed limit in any lane. When overall traffic is moving faster.
All the righteous ignoramus does is cause a bottle neck traffic flow and will sooner or later cause a crash by frustrating other drivers. By making them slow, lane change, speed up etc.
They also block semi trucks who want to move with traffic but the semi can't get the speed or space to pass in the left lane and get back in.
If you can only see KCAM in your rear view mirror. If you ever look in your mirrors. Speed up.

I see traffic slow downs like this around metro areas all the time although the worst I may have experienced is around Boston, on a clockwork like basis.

One little traffic perturbation such as someone entering or exiting the higway at a speed significantly below that of the other traffic will cause a backlash for miles, just think about how long after a traffic light turns green it takes you to get going when you're 10 cars back, it's not green light, everybody moves in unison.

Just to throw in a pat on the back for semi-truck and other professional drivers, most of them are shepherds of the road guiding all the nimrods in their personal vehicles away from gumming up the works.

i say 'good for them'! Nothing jams up traffic like the a**holes that cut around in the shoulder, pass everybody and then force their way in ahead of those who stayed put and moved along smoothly.

Years ago, I was headed over to the eastern shore of MD, to pick up some parts from the AC dealer, in Ingleside, traffic on 50 was down to stop and go, I was in the fast lane, I looks behind me, and what do I see, but a corvette speeding down the median shoulder, so at that particular moment, I had to spit out some 'backy juice. So I opened the door. Corvette slides slowly down into the V shaped median! I guess the tow trucks got him outta the cat tails, but I just kept on truckin!

I travel I70 in and out of Columbus every day and see traffic jams often that by the time I get through there is no visible cause. I think a lot of these traffic jams are caused by our very own state troopers. With the fairly new get over or slow down for emergency vehicles cause traffic jams whenever a state patrol writes a speeding ticket.

I did something simular to that we were on our way to Nags Head going south on 95 ,and there was a construction area ahead traffic was at a dead stop. I was talking to Northbound traffic and they said it was solid for 8 mile ahead of me and most wasn't taking turns to enter the one lane section. My buddy was ahead of me pulling his camper and I moved over into the other lane, and stayed beside him. big trucks got the same idea and pretty soon my lane was empty ahead of me.
looking back as far as I could see the big trucks were moving the same speed as I was but we were spaced pretty far apart. closest to me was at least a hundred yards-- wasn't long we were up to 40 mph an still lots of space between the right lane. We got few one fingered salutes as we came out of the construction area, and was being passed by faster traffic. most were smiling and waving. if every one didn't think they had to get there first there would be no hang ups at those places. usually they must not be able to read cause there are signs at least a mile before telling you to merge over -- not pass everyone ya can to create that bottleneck.

Get a CB Radio and you'll probably know what's going on. Here are some things I've heard of or seen:

It could have been a vehicle going the wrong way down the road and the truckers were keeping everyone back until he exited.

A disabled semi in the fast lane around a curve, being recovered/towed.

Rolling roadblock for a high speed pursuit.

I suppose it could be a couple of bored truckers too.

A couple years ago we got some free tickets to Country USA in Oshkosh. 41 was at a crawl for probably 8-10 miles and people were passing on the shoulder. A bunch of us started moving over to slow them down so they would just go further into the ditch to go around. Eventually an ambulance wanted to go down the shoulder with their lights on, but they kept getting stuck as we weren't moving so neither were some of the morons being blocked on the shoulder. I can only hope it didn't cause any harm to the person that the ambulance was for.

I asked a state DOT officer about just that same scenario here in NC. He agreed about the stupidity of people zooming by in the empty lane...BUT THEY HAVE A LEGAL RIGHT TO USE THAT LANE TO THE POINT OF CLOSURE. Officer didn't like it, but the "law is the law". Now those sneaking by on the shoulder of the road are clearly in violation of the law.
