Which is stronger?

Hey folks,
will be redoing some paddocks to make them foal friendly. Using stock panels now with 5 bars that are close enough together to get a leg caught and broken. No problem for grown horses, but can't risk it with babies.
Looking into the same panels with only 3 rows but consideringbuilding a solid setup because steel prices don't seam to be real bad now and have a place close with free delivery. Have to decide between galvanized or paint ourselves and shape. Given the same material thickness and size (2"), would round or square be stronger? Not sure yet which is cheaper but kinda hoping for the square because I can make it fit nicer and use the scraps easier. Looking at 10' spans.

Thanks, Dave

Looking at my steel book, a 2" HSS square tube and a 2" Diameter pipe (2.38" actual) are approximately similar strength with similar (close) thicknesses. For what you are planning to do I don't think it will make much of a difference. If you had actual dimensions of the material you are planning to use I could give a better answer. From a strictly theoretical standpoint a 2" square with the same thickness as a 2" round section would be slightly stronger in most loading cases.

For a given wall thickness, I'd expect the strength
to be roughly the same, with a slight edge to the
round.

Round would be easier to curve/bend and harder to
get tight fitting joints with. Square makes joints
easy but harder to bend without kinking.

Square will have a greater moment of inertia, and thus will have a greater strength in bending. However, it will be a little more susceptible to deformation.

No bends (unless a horse gets stupid which is why I want the strongest). Just straight pieces that will have a flange welded on each end to either weld or bolt to a steal post.

Thanks, Dave

Make sure the panels are tall enough so they won't ever try to jump over.
I lost a horse and a foal on 2 seperate occasions that tried just that.
one got stuck with the one,the other with both hindlegs trough the top two bars on a 5' high gate and broke their legs with the bone coming trough the skin.I had to shoot them both.
I hung the gates a foot higher.
