O/T.... End of a generation

Just read that Mr. Frank Buckles passed away Sunday. He was the last documented living American veteran of World War one. I had the pleasure to meet him about 4 years ago on veteran's day at the national WW1 memorial in Kansas City. As well as serving in WW1, he also served in WW2 and was a POW in that war. This is a sad day!!

He did not serve in WWII. He was a civilian business man who was taken prisoner.

Wow, I always wondered how many WW1 vets were left. Now they are all gone. Real Sad.

Just think WW1 was started with the death of 1 man. Arch duke Franz Ferdinand was shot while riding in his motor/wagon/car in Yugoslavia. And it was blamed on the Government of Yugoslavia.
The Europeans divided up sides and then went to war. All those deaths, then all the hatred built up from WW1 started WW2. Almost makes you sick.

Why is that a sad day?
I don't think he had a reason to complain, getting to the age he did.

he was luckier than many thousand other ones who never got back alive or in one piece from that awfull war.

Yea,I was thinking that too. I saw him interviewed a few years ago and thought he said he worked for military contractor during WWII,but I didn't want to try to be the smartest guy in the room. Usually backfires on me and I end up eating my words.

Hummmm. I am sure I read that, Oh around 7 or 8 years ago, that the last WWI veteran had died. I wonder if either he was really a WWI vereran or if there might be others? Let us see. War ended in 1918 and I have heard of people lying and getting in at 14. Taking the figures how old would this guy be?

He was 16 when he enlisted. He was an ambulance driver, just like Ernest Hemingway. Wonder if they ever met?

What if they needed a draft today? Majority of kids were farmers back then and WW2. How many people are survivers today. Nation full of wussies. They teach kids all the wrong ideals. Just watching some of the sh#%*^t on cable that my daughter will watch(which I would drop if not for the outdoor channel and rfd tv)it just blows my mind. Better stop now

I remember in the interview that I saw,he said that when he went and tried to enlist,he told them he was 16 and they told him he had to be 18. So he said he want home then went back 3 weeks later,then he was 21.

The draft would never fly cause any politician that voted for it would lose his job.

Thank God for the History channel and the World at War series which airs on cable from time to time. These programs teach what really happened over there.

How about all the young men that have fought and died over the last 10 years? I guess they were wussies becaused they VOLUNTEERED. The baby boom generation, whose whining and selfishness has turned the USA into a socialist nanny state has the least authority to bad mouth any other generation in the history of the country, yes, I am a member of the baby boom generation.
