anybody have a vortec 350? I just bout a half ton 4x4 and the motor runs perfect. real clean but it just dont seem to have much power for a 350. Im pretty sure its geared high because its practically idling at 70mph. Anyways the motor is real quite when its cold, but after the engine warms up it has a rattle/chatter/ click noise underneath around the oil pain. The Oil pressure is about 45 when its idling cold but after it warms up it only holds about 18 idling and never gets over 40 while driving. Never had a truck with oil pressure that low. Wondering if the clicking could be the oil pump going south

My 97s oil runs all over the place, sometimes 0 and sometimes 60. 70MPH is 2000RPM with tow package. When the idle goes up to 1200RPM it will be time for intake gaskets. You might check the Catalytic converters for the rattle.(Pound on them with your fist, if they rattle you found the noise)

well it only rattle after it warms up. but heck ill try it. its got 230k on it so the cats are probly shot. And might be my power issue right there!

I have a 97 gmc with 5.7 vortec. It run 45-50 lbs. preasure cold or hot with 15-40 shell rotella. Plenty of power & good fuel milage. Pulled tandam axle from harrisburg,pa.to northwestern in. (610 miles) and never stoped for fuel. Standard tank and truck & trailer loaded. The only problems oxegen sensors & clutch on air.

I had one and found out after I got rid of it that the catalatic converter was plugged up. cut it off or clean it out and try may have to change the oil because off backward exhaust and extra heat Make sure oil pressure sensor is good and not lying to you

You need to verify the location of the noise first. Use a stethoscope or a screwdriver held up to your ear. If it is coming from the pan don't rely on the gauge or light, screw in an oil pressure gauge where the sending unit comes out and test the pressure.

The only noisy 350 Vortec I have ran into ended up having spun cam bearing,,, I removed the valve covers,,, valve springs, valve guides and lifters checked OK... High mileage engine so customer went with a new bullet. He kept the old engine for the heads and found the bad cam BRG. when he took it apart.... His heads were cracked but he had never had a coolant/heating issue...

Mine has close to zero OP hot in the summer,,, I traded for it knowing it would need a engine someday but have drove it 4/5 years this way... I don't drive much tho can't afford to feed it  ... I have a few extra bullets to build if and when it croaks out...

Even if a good wrench showed up with his doctors bag internal engine noise are hard to confirm like you describe... I don't know of a pattern internal failer nor have a best guess,,, just hope its something external a converter...

I used to have a 97 with the vortex 350. Used to get 17 mpg interstate driving. Pulled a 26' goose neck trailer with it. Biggest problem was it wasn't build to pull that big of a trailer. Bought a 2001 2500hd with 8.1, great puller but miss my 97. Wished I still had it. Think last good year GM had a great pickup. Working in GM parts I hate to have a new version.
