Talk about a dose of reality. Yesterday was a wonderful day. After working on cow fences for 3 hours my neighbor called and asked me to take my tractor with a loader and go load some hay for a customer he had coming to buy some rolls of hay. I agreed with no reservation. I had my 7 year old son with me, so we loaded the tractor on the trailer and off we went. I knew the road/drive into the feild was boggy but I had been into it several time. When pulling into the drive I moved over to one side to attempt to miss a hole. Needless to say I hit a soft/muddy patch and bogged down. I thought No Problem. I unloaded the tractor and hooked a chain to the front of the truck. I then instructed my son to steer the truck down the drive, not to touch the brakes or the gas! I would pull him. Now he has been learning to drive the tractor. We started down the drive and he was doing great! Then it happend. I had left my phone in the dash pocket. It rang and he thought it was so important that he had to answer it. He took his eyes off the drive and turned the steering wheel. I called out to him to pay attention but it was too late! he had run the truck into the shallow ditch. By this time my neighbor and his customer drove up. Everyone was OK and nothing was damaged but my pride. Needless to say it took 2 tractors and an hour to get the truck and trailor out of the ditch. I asked him after we had everything straighted out what happened.
His response: You usually answer the phone while driving! What could I say, the truth was hitting me right between the eyes. I have thought on this all afternoon yesterday and all day today. I am really going to be carefull what I say or do around my children.
