farmall h gears

My dad has a '51 Farmall H and ever since I could remember, the 3rd gear wouldn't work. He said it went out and he put one in and it won't go into 3rd gear only. Come to find out he had to take one out of a Super H to make it work. My question is do Supers have the same gears? is it possible that that H was special ordered? Any info would help. Thanks!

Supers have a higher 2 3 and 4 gear ratio than non super Hs, I have been told. Depending whether he changed the upper or lower gear I could imagine that either the sides of the gears could collide or they could miss each other entirely. In order for the Super to have higher gear ratios it would have to have larger gears on the countershaft and smaller gears on the main shaft, I think. If you take the top off it should be evident what went wrong.

Yes, I have heard of it and I think they will go right in, but you need both gears for any particular ratio. I think it would be easiest to change the entire set of gears, or to leave them all stock. I have also heard that M+W or one of the other aftermarket companies made a 7 mph 4th gear option for the H. It would be necessary to change 2 and 3 together since they are together on one slider on the main shaft. 4 and 5 are also on a shared slider but 5 is a direct drive off the input shaft so it would be the same for H and Super H. As I understand it each gear on the countershaft is separate, so you could change any or all of them independently.
