Got a '95 Escort thta has been throwing a fit lately. Every time I turn the brights on the car dies and then starts again by itself. Also, when I turn the turn signals on the lights dim when the signal lights light up. Do you think it could be the battery? It is 8 years old. I will clean all the terminals again when I get the chance later this week. It does crank over just fine.

Thanks!!!

Not the battery. I had an Escort that did the very same thing. The multifunction switch in the steering column is coming apart. I took the plastic cover off and found that I could pull the switch together with a plastic cable tie, aka tyrap. MUCH cheaper than buying and installing a new switch. Never had another problem as long as that car lived.

Thanks!!! I will take the steering column apart and have a looksy. Will the malfunction switch jump out at me or is it hard to find?

I suggest you disconnect the negative battery cable first. Once you take the plastic cover off the switch is right there in front of you. It's a large assembly with a lot of wires connected to it. Wiggle the turn signal lever a little bit and see if the switch assembly separates somewhat. That is the problem. I wrapped a medium sized tyrap around it and pulled it together fairly tightly. Wasn't terribly difficult.
